1.9 Tdi VW 105bhp - Engine tapping when rev'd - Stuck lifter? - Roy Brown

On my 1.9 Tdi 105bhp Golf there is a quite loud tapping noise when revved over idle (no sound on idle). I think it is a problem relating to the cam, the car has covered 100k

I have removed the rocker cover too get a better look and all off the tappets look to be set at the same height....however one looks very flush to the base - Could this be the cause of the noise???

Also 3 injectors look the same, apart from the second one where the springs on it look more compressed compared to the others, is this normal?

I would take a closer look at the camshaft lobes.Check for any scoring or worn away metal on the surface that strikes the injector and/or valves.More info here;www.myarchive.us/richc/VW_TDI_with_PumpeDuse.pdf

I would take a closer look at something other than the camshaft. Something like the flywheel.
You cand get a better feedback of where the sound is coming from by taking a woden broomstick handle or something shorter and press one side on a location near where you think the sound might be coming from, and the other end on your ear.
Be carefull not to put the handle near moving parts as you might get injured
