Peugeot 206 - 1.4 petrol 2001 - MOT emissions fail - jamie wood
My 2001 206 1.4 (petrol) 73K miles has just failed MOT quite overwhelmingly on emissions:

Fast idle test: CO: 7.21 (max 0.3), HC 213 (Max 200), Lambda 0.82 (0.970 - 1.030)

2nd Fast idle test: CO: 7.88, HC: 318, Lambda 0.79

Natural Idle test: CO: 7.7

Mechanic thought it would probably be the Cat (which he tells me isn't original) or one of the sensors. Anyone else seen figures as high as this?

Car runs fine otherwise, haven't had any problems whilst driving.

Your knowledge and suggestions would be much appreciated! many thanks in advance!

Not so sure it will be the cat.The emissions are way out ,far too rich. You will need to get some diagnostics done by someone that can interpret the data from the engine ecu.Has the car been serviced recently? Are the spark plugs and air filter in good order?Coolant level correct?

It must be drinking fuel! Needs a diagnostic really, but I'd be tempted to chuck a new coolant temp sensor in to see what that does - however, if it's been running that rich for a while, then the lambda sensor and cat are likely stuffed as well.

Google "Planet Owners Map" to find a local Peugeot owner with Peugeot-specific diagnostic software.

Thanks for the info. I've found the map but unfortunatley no-one close enough to get the car to easily.

From everything I've read here and elsewhere sounds like it could be the end. not really worth it if it's going to need all new sensors and possibly a cat to maybe solve the issue.

Cheers anyway.

The job of the 3 way catalyst is to convert harmful gasses into those that are not harmful. The cat could be shot, but for what it's worth try a bottle of Cataclean and giving the car a good rag up the road before presenting it for retest. Who knows, it just might do the trick. It has done before.

+1 for cataclean.
Mine always fails on emissions, but cataclean sorts it out, every time .

If the rest of the car is good - and older 206s are pretty sturdy beasts that don't show signs of wear and tear - I'd consider a replacement cat from CATS2U, they're only around £50 and from my experience, have been good.

But, get it checked over properly before throwing parts at the problem.

here is one to try find the engine earths and clean them and then find the earth for the computer and clean that one up 2001 was long time ago, computer earths can cause problems with fuel trims long term topped out short term flatlined one car in question went to 2 mechs who could not find the problem the third checked and cleaned the computer earth and the system came good !
