A flashing engine management lamp indicates that the ECM is detecting a misfire. The cause could be many things though, from a spark plug or ignition coil to a loss of compression to a vacuum leak or faulty fuel injector.

If this a Hyundai Getz (2002-2008 car) ... then stop. You do NOT want to take it into a Hyundai dealership. It is an older car, and they will only want to replace parts - virtually all main agent dealerships are not interested in fixing parts, but replacing parts.

Take it back to where you bought it from. Under the Consumer Rights Act, any fault that occurs within the first 6 months is assumed to have been 'present or developing' at the time of sale, and they are responsible for fixing it.

If you take it to a Hyundai dealership, they fix it and you pay the bill, you will have absolutely NO right to give that bill to the garage who sold you the car.

The rights you have are affected by how old the car is, the price you paid, etc. If you buy a 3 year old car for £10k, you've got a lot more rights than if you buy a 14 year old car for £500. The law states that the rights are based on 'reasonable expectations'.

A fair few cars have the emissions light on virtually all the time. It's not an MOT failure, and might mean nothing apart from a very occasional misfire, which could be horribly difficult and expensive to track down and fix, and an un-necessary fix at that.

So, firstly, how old is the car and what price did you pay for it ?
