Renault Megane 2002 - Slow starting 1.9 dci - KCSRenault
Hello,

I recently changed the glow plugs on my Megane as I suspected they needed changed and they did however it has not cured my starting time.

The car is parked in the garage at night and when I try to start it in the morning it turns over for nearly 10 seconds after I left the glow plug light go out.

However I have noticed if I let the glow plugs go out and leave the ignition on, I can hear a variety of very light and high pitched noises as though something is building up, and then after around 10 seconds of the glow plugs lights going out, the car starts straight away.

I don't mind this if it's just a technique. But anyone any ideas if there is something causing it, as I said glow plugs are working 100%, the car is regularly serviced.

Any ideas?

Thanks

When was the last time the fuel filter was changed, if ever ?

Sounds like it might be the fuel system pressuring up. A clogged-up filter would mean this takes longer.

Common rail diesels don't need glow plugs to start unless the ambient temp is around or below zero. Also, how fast is the engine scranking over, and what is the fuel pressure during cranking?Anything below 150 bar,and it will struggle to get fired up.

Agree with the "Doc",

Diesels need to spin over at least 180 RPM for good starting.

So get it scanned for cranking speed and fuel pressure.

One other thought is the glow plug relay,

Some have a temperature sensor inside to control time and duration though I'm not sure if yours does.
