Looking for the best all round generic diagnostic tool, I have OBD2 dongle with phone ap but does not seem much good.

I have electrical problems across my personal fleet Renault Kangoo 1.9, VW Sharan 1.9TD and Landrover Discovery TD5.

Coming up for retirement I would like some equipment which i can use on any vehicle as this is ab bit of a hoby as well as a chore. I obviously have a smart phone and laptop

Any avice on some all round equipment?

Thanks, Mike.

Firstly, there is no one piece of kit that does everthing. For VW/Audi ,your best bet would be Vcds/Vagcom for around £300.As for the others, then you may be better off with some professional kit s/hand from flea-bay.A Snap on solus scanner will probably do most of what you want for around £5-600.

I'd recommend joining various user forums specific to the marques you own. You might find someone local with the equipment who'll loan it to you or do diagnostics for a beer.

Very interesting site. Thanks for posting.

He's pretty negative about the cost-effectiveness of the VERY spendy pro diagnostic kit, though (He specifically warns against Snap-on, IIRC).

Tends to confirm my determination to avoid modern cars if at all possible.
