Hi looking to sell my car with a private plate on. I understand you have to put the plate back on retention before you sell the car but do u get a new v5 document with the original on? Is Tia sent automatically or do you have to apply? Anything you have to change insurance? Thanks for your help

If you sell the car with the plate on it, the new owner acquires the plate. You need to put the plate on retention (£80 fee) on gov. website then the DVLA will send you a new v5 with the original number plate on it. You will get it automatically when you put the plate on retention but it can take about a week to arrive. Insurance just need a phone call letting them know the plate has changed.

The tax or SORN is not passed on when you sell a vehicle or transfer ownership to someone else. This includes giving it to a member of your family.

A logbook (V5C) will be sent to the new owner and you’ll get a vehicle tax refund by cheque for any remaining months.
