Land Rover Freelander 2 - Engine whine - regis

Our 3-year old 19,000 mile Freelander has suddenly developed an engine whin. The landrover dealer, after a brief engine run, diagnosted this as caused by the power-steering oil being contaminated with metal fragments. This sounds a bizarre diagnosis for an engine-speed related noise, but is it reasonable?

Is the whine constant or just turning the steering lock to lock ?

There has been an issue with PAS and if its slight you can remove and clean the PAS resovoir. If the filter in the resovoir has only just started to block the oil normally froths up like coca cola.

landrover normally replace all the PAS system even if its out of warranty as gesture of good will as its a well documented issue.

If its a whine ( more like whistle ) normally the rubber gromment on the steering columb under the pedals has become misplaced and the whine from the turbo can be heard quite loudly in the cabin

On a three year old, with such low mileage, the dealer should replace the lot. Steering rack, pump and filter/reservoir. It is, as the doc says, a well known problem. The metal apparently comes from weld spatter in the steering rack housing, during manufacture. Mine was done at four years old under LR extended warranty. Never any more trouble, though I suspect some whine now coming from the alternator. I will let that develop a bit, as they say.
