The 4-stud, 5-spoke alloys have leaked from new - a well known problem. After 16 years of weekly inflating I've decided to make a real effort to have inner tubes fitted. Nobody wants to know. Will the valve holes be in the right place or are there other reasons that tyre firms will not disclose ? Advice would be greatly appreciated, if necesary I would consider making a drill jig for new valve holes.

Nowhere will fit tubes to your tyres.

Have the tyres removed from the wheels, and give the 'inside' a rub down then apply a couple of coats of brush applied enamel paint. When you have the tyres replaced there's a rubberised sealant that can be applied round the bead. You could do one at a time and use the spare to drive the car.

It is not approved to fit tubes to tubless tyres. The problem stems from the first ply of the tyre creating a direction in the inside and with time the tube walks around the tyre ripping the valve off or causing the tube to split open.

Half a tin of emergency tyre repair injected as per instructions usually seals the leaks. Inject it when the valve is at the top of the wheel.

Thanks Peter, At last something I have'nt tried. Presumably it will not affect future inflations ? - Robin (Whacko).

You have to partially deflate the tyre to 20 PSI then inject the sealer then inflate the tyre so you will need a compressor. This clears the valve of any sealer and of course inflates the tyre to the correct pressure. Regards Peter

Better still, remove the valve inner. Suitable tools are a couple of quid from any factors
