BMW 3 Series E90 - BMW E92 325i 07 battery change - MartynS

The battery on my E92 325i needs to be changed. Reading various forums there is much disagreement over whether the car would need to be reprogrammed when I change it. I would use a bosch S5 96.

Does a change of battery need re programming?

Thanks

Modern cars with all the electronic gizmos fitted need a good and correct capacity battery. It is recommended that when a new battery is fitted, the battery management system be programmed for the new fitment,so that the charging circuit is optimised. You could probably get away with not having it done with no ill effect .Also be aware that some Bmw models are fitted with 2 options of battery, one is standard duty,(white pastic case) and heavy duty (black plastic case)usually needed for low temp climates. The correct Bosch battery shoud be fine.If fitting the battery yourself, make a note of all the wiring connectors that are attached to and around the battery area.It is very easy to forget to reconnect some of them,as one is connected to the airbag system.

When I had a new battery fitted to my 118D it needed to be the correct AGM battery and it needed to be programmed. The BMW alternator (like all modern alternators) charges at a much higher rate than alternators of old and an incorrect battery would be damaged.

Luckily mine was done under warranty (one day to go and the delaer diagnosed a battery issue when the car went in for service - asked if I wanted it doing - daft question).
