KIA Cee'd - feedback on reliability of high mileage ceed / i30 - eustace

Hello,

I am considering buying a used high mileage kia ceed / hyundai i30.

I see that 2007 models with about 120K miles on them are available for around the £1800 - £2000 mark.
At this age mileage, there is not much difference between the purchase price for petrol and diesel cars.

I don't do much miles per years. Perhaps 8000 - 10000 miles.

Given that this age ceed diesels do not have the usual problem areas such as DMFs and DPFs, will the reliability of this car be similar to a similar age / mileage petrol ceed?

There doesn't seem to be many endemic diesel faults mentioned in HJ's car by car breakdown.
Nor do a search on the Internet reveal many diesel specific issues (except the odd turbo failure).

For cars of this age, the major failures seem to be electrical related such as, ECUs, ABS, Power steering, or the more usual exhausts, suspensions, etc. These issues seem to equally affect petrol or diesel models.

So I am wondering whether it makes sense to go for the diesel model, despite my low annual use, to take advantage of;

a) higher fuel economy
b) lower car tax.

Another point worth mentioning is that the car will only be used on weekend trips (say 100 mile round trips) during the summer months,
while during the winter months it will be used for commuting to work (50 mile round trip).
During summer I intend to do the commute to work by bike and train.

So will leaving a car unused during the week, affect the life of a diesel car more, vis-a-vis a petrol?

I am hoping to get feedback from high mileage diesel ceed owners as to the reliability of their cars, and whether they would expect it to continue giving reasonably reliable performance.

Regards

We bought a Hyundai i30 1.6 CRDi on an 09 plate after it had had 6 months as a hire car.

We ran it for five and a bit years / 65k miles, until we sold it privately this April. Whilst it had always had a few trim squeaks and rattles, nothing mechanical ever went wrong with it. I have a suspicion that some suspension component was starting to be less than 100% on the right rear corner, but given the number of speed humps my wife had to cover on her commute to work, this is not hugely surprising. Mechanically I have no reason to suppose the car would not have carried on in the same manner, possibly needing some suspension work at some point.

It was a comfortable, reliable and surprisingly enjoyable to drive car that I was sad to let go - but arrival of son #2 meant it just didn't have the room we needed.

As you're taking the car on long runs, I shouldn't have thought that a diesel would take any harm from being left in between journeys. That said - whilst HJ's car-by-car doesn't show any particularly prevalent issues, that doesn't make them invincible, and as with any used car of any significant age, condition and evidence of proper service history is vital - a 2007 car is now 9 years old and no matter the reputation for reliability when new, how it's been treated since is more important.

Cant comment on Kia's, but they are about same as an i30. I have had my 2010 i30 diesel auto since new, currently on 65k miles, pristine & and regularly dealer serviced. A great deal has gone wrong with it during its life - including instrument cluster, gearbox, steering column and much more. Suggests to me very poor component quality control. Compound that with a breakdown a year ago that took the Hyundai dealer + Hyundai UK tech 3 months to get to root cause - despite use of flight recorders etc. They seemed to throw parts at it at random, fortunately at cost to Hyundai thanks to the warranty. My car also creaks and rattles a lot and always has. I can compare with an Astra of similar vintage or a Focus that is rather older and my i30 really is the (very) poor relation.

I have approached Hyundai UK customer services & even their CEO regarding all of this on several occasions (eg about extending warranty etc) but they dont want to know.

So - sorry - beware - I would not recommend an i30...unless you want to by mine? And no I will not buy another!

Might also be worth checking aftermarket parts prices as they seem to me to be much more costly than for other equivalent cars.

Talikg Hoa*** seems to have had bad luck with his i30 and his dealer. Mine is now 6 1/2 years old (dealer serviced), no problems as yet, (touch wood!) dealer is excellent and servicing prices similar to local independents.

Living near the Driving Test Centre, I see quite a few Driving Schools use i30s, the Hyundai 5 year warranty does include taxi/private hire use, though limits it to 100,000 miles, as opposed to private use, which is unlimited mileage.

Before this I had two new Corollas, considering the price difference, I didn't notice significantly lower quality or performance.

Thanks all, for your comments.

I read a comment on another forum which mentioned that earlier models of the Kia ceed diesels had a different turbo, which was prone to failure, and that models post-2010 face lift had an upgraded turbo. Does the same apply to the hyundai i30 as well?

Would you know if the turbo failure issue was widespread or is it relatively rare? If the turbo failed, were they replaced with the upgraded turbo? And if the turbo has not failed, is it something to be wary of on the pre-2010 models?

I've got a 57 plate Kia Cee'd 1.6 CRDi and its on 97,000 miles. I've done 20,000 miles in it since I've owned it and so far I've had no issues with it at all. I've not heard anything about turbo issues on them either and besides with the 7 year warranty if anything cropped up during that time then it would've been replaced/fixed.

I've got to admit the Cee'd is one of the best cars I've owned for reliability and has exceeded my expectations having come from 2 very unreliable Mk6 VW Golfs!

I'm planning on driving the Cee'd till it dies and judging by the way it is at 97k I think thats a long time off yet! Well hopefully!
