Mitsubishi Galant 1.8 1995 T/belt change - loathecliff

Hi Guys

I'm in Portugal & I've been offered one of the above. It was UK reg. at one time but I can't get the details right. All I can see are engines bigger than 1.8.

So assuming the owner has the right size engine: How easy is the belt change, & is it an interference engine?

(I know the present owner hasn't touched the belt in his 8 yrs!). - Some of these lumps had Mr. Lanchester's balancer shafts IIRC?

Any info on these beasts would be much appreciated as this could be a good banger in the land of the overpriced old car.

Very reliable in their day - just remember it's now 20 years old so issues could appear that could easily write the car off. At this age parts availability may also be becoming problem - saying that lots listed on Eurocarparts

I believe the engine IS an inteference engine

Thxs Big John. It will have to be for throwaway money anyway; but if it's an interference lump, I think I might pass & go back to 30+ yr old Merc diesels, & plod :(

It's €60 to change ownership, & then if it breaks it has to be scrapped to stop paying the annual tax. The older the car, the cheaper the tax.

Shame, Mitsus were well screwed together, pre-Carisma.

If the car is generally in good order, surely it's worth the cost of changing the belt if you can do it yourself or know a small garage than can do it for you?

Seconded

Didn't want to sound too negative but cambelt kit does look cheap and the Galants were very reliable back then - may outlast many recent cars! Whilst it still only costs a few £100 euros a year then go for it.

At this age condition (mechanical and body) all important

Most cars are inteference now - including 30 year old mercs diesels - due to the higher compression ratio of diesels all are inteference! Merc cam chains can fail as well and these are expensive to change

If you want a non inteference engine buy a Ford Cortina or some Fiat 1.2 8v. Some of the VAG 1.6/2.0 8v engines are OK (not all!)

Ok OK, I'm convinced.

Nobody truly understands my plight: Being a tight-wad AND naturally a lazy git, isn't easy :(

I do the MB diesels by the 'new chain attached to the old one, & don't ever let it go slack' method.

As for "buy a Cortina". Now come on, did I really deserve that? :( :)

Tee Hee - I just know a Cortina Pinto misses, I proved it myself!

I repeat though - the Galant was very reliable - possibly why parts still listed, there are a lot still on the road!

As I am being forced to recall the b***** things, the 1.6 didn't always avoid valve bending, but 2.0 was ok, (it was also the only one bearable ..... on a smooth road; on a wind free day). The mk3 Cortina was a very symbolic car in my working life as the next attempted trade-in of one became the catalyst that determined when I retired from motor trading. It took two weeks after the decision. I was free!!! - As for them having value today, ... best not go there.

That 1.8 Galant BJ, will it have the three belts (balancer shafts) or one, do you know? Googling was indeterminate for me. Thxs
