Is it safe to leave these chargers connected for say 9 weeks while away? If I simply disconnect the battery as per the handbook, will there be any electronic issues when I come to reconnect - and how would I go about locking/unlocking the car?

I have three of the Lidl battery chargers working right now maintaining batteries on two motorcycles and one car. leave them connected as long as you like, will not damage the batteries.

Brilliant little chargers with one disadvantage.

If the mains fails and comes back on again, the chargers will have to be reset.

But you won't be there to do it should this happen.

Sorry!

Yes, the power cut issue is one that concerns me on this option!

Any ideas about the implications of simply leaving the fully charged battery disconnected for 9 weeks? This is what the handbook recommends but I'm concerned about what might happen when I come to reconnect - and how to go about locking the vehicle after disconnection (keyless entry)!

Hmm, but how then do I unlock the car with the bonnet shut and the battery disconnected?

Do you not have a keyhole in one of the front doors?

Just make sure you don't park it so close to a wall you can't open the door.

Ah yes, that's what the hidden key is for, but of course I'll be without the alarm and I think my insurance will have something to say about leaving the vehicle for so long unalarmed..... I seem to be in a catch 22!

Many thanks for advice here and elsewhere. Decided to go down the road of a variable output float charger that is not vulnerable to shutdown in the event of a mains outage, an issue with the Aldi/Lidl kit. The minimum output of the one I've ordered is sufficient to compensate for the drain caused by the 'gizmos' and will keep the battery at an adequate charge level.

Word of warning this is not a good solution your planning to keep the car in a small poorly ventilated garage i.e. Hydrogen & Oxygen. These gases are given off after the battery has reached 95% of charge.

My charger with a permanent float setting maintains the charge at 90% to prevent gassing. Since my charger is now 26 years old I would exepct modern chargers such as the C-Tek to have a similar feature.

All smart chargers, Ctek, Aldi, Lidl, Ring, etc all move to float setting once the battery is fully charged, specifically to avoid gassing off - it's this feature that allows them to be left connected 24/365 and the feature that makes the "smart".
