Just purchased Peugeot 206 diesel from the roadside, stupid thing to do I know. Wednesday night purchased this car after driving it for 5 minutes and last night engine management light came on. Took it to the garage they said it could just be the tension needing tightening or a new timing belt, did I know when it was last changed. There's no history and the guy was a real dellboy with the chat, I actually nearly walked away when he told me who he knew and told him so, that's when he did shut up, The car has done 153k have tried the last owner but nobody is in. Hes obviously dealing as a trader cause that was the part missing from the logbook. The only thing I can do to save several hundreds of pounds is to change the timing belt, do I have any rights to ask him for some money for the bill. I got no receipt from the guy and paid cash. Dumbest thing I've ever done!! As I hate being ripped off by people who avoid paying tax and selling crap knowingly.

If you bought knowingly with no service history then why do you think you have any right to expect the cambelt to have been changed?

Unless he actually told you it had been changed then I can't see you have much comeback.

I mean, really, a 153k Peuegot 206 isn't ever going to be perfect.

As a trader you have a claim against the seller, but under the circumstances given I suspect you have more chance of winning the lottery

Thanks for your reply. Guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and fork out 160 quid which I didn't expect to do within 24 hours of purchase, and 2 short trips.

Well, on the bright side if the light hadn't come on and you'd just driven it the cambelt might have snapped.

Presumably, when you bought a car with no history, you were budgeting for a service and a few things needing doing (cambelt probably being top of the list) as a bit of precautionary mantenance anyway so haven't really lost much.

Presumably the car was cheap, so you've got some money in hand to get it right.

No one would expect a car from the side of the road to be an A1 forecourt jobbie with a fully receipted up to the minute service history.

I do wonder if the fault will be rectified by just changing the timing belt? It could be much more serious if it is throwing up the Engine Management light and giving a fault code.

Buying any car at the roadside is pretty dodgy, but one with no history and >150K ? I hope it wasn't clocked .... :-)

But there certainly won't be any recompense. I presume you thought the deal was too good to be true - I hope it wasn't.
