1.6 TDI - 2013 Seat Toledo towbar - Chris79
Hello,

I'm in the process of trying to decide where to get a tow bar fitted. I will be pulling a trailer tent, probably unbraked and know very little about towing.

I spoke to the Seat dealer who quoted me 996.00 to have a tow bar fitted. There seems to be a few national firms who would do it for around 450, which is huge difference.

I'm am a little concerned about the effect on the remaining manufacturers warranty of having a 3rd party fit the towbar but 996 does seem excessive.

Does anyone have any recommendations or tips?

Best Regards

A Seat fitted towbar will come with full manufacturers approval and the electrics will be fully integrated into the existing electronic systems. All towbars have to be CE approved ,whoever makes them, however ,an aftermarket towbar will not have the same level of electronic complexity. So you may find the rear park sensors (if fitted) are not disabled when a trailer is hooked up and also there will be no additional trailer warning on the dash, only a buzzer at the rear of the car.I am sure there are thousands of cars out there with non dealer fit towbars that work perfectly ok.So its make your mind up time.

You'll probablly need the manufacturers' "Plug and play" connections on a new car like that, plus a dealer ECU adjustment /reset. It's not as easy as just tapping in to the lighting circuits these days. There are relays and bypass kits available for many newish models but it depends on the car as to whether you can go that route. A reputable fitter should use the OEM kit and charge a lot less than that, I would have thought. I fitted one myself a couple of months ago, to an 08 Octavia, it's not too bad a job , two evenings worth. I was able to go with the bypass kit/relay, so the whole job cost me £90.

See elecie's answer--- more comprehensive than mine!!

I had a tow bar fitted to my 2013 Seat Leon in June this year. Its for towing a 10 cwt box trailer for taking stuff to the tip while we are carrying out building work and collecting stuff from the merchants.

Went to our local tow bar specialists and after a little negotiation £250 all in fitted for a standard fixed type including single traditional 7 pin electrics which was all we needed for our trailer. All works a treat.

Don't forget when you fit a tow bar you need to inform your insurer since its classified as a modification. Aviva simply made a note on our policy and there was no charge.
