Peugeot 106 - Gearbox oil seal - liammcl

Hi,
My 1997 Peugeot 106 1.1 passenger side gearbox to driveshaft oil seal is leaking very slightly..
I've ordered one from Fleaby, which should be here 2mrw.

I'm ok with getting the drive shaft and seal out etc ..

My cunning plan ;)
is to smear gearbox oil round ALL surfaces of the seal.
Would this be ok, or do certain parts have to be dry on installation.

I don't have any grease...
Do I really need some?, or will gearbox oil do? to lubricate the seal.

I am still trying to convince myself not to use the old gearbox oil to save £16 on the Total....
My thinking is that I can change that any any time, easy peasy through the breather cap up top , near the battery)

I am planning on using some wood , to tap the seal in gently, so it can't go further in , than level to the gearbox body.

I plan to hold the driveshaft's weight by a rope from up top,
and oil the driveshaft spline before insertion
and twist gently as it goes into the seal.

What do you reckon?
Any tips would be appreciated...

Cheers
Liam

Hopefully, I'll give it a go 2mrw..

might use engine oil on the outer rim of the seal and on the metal hole it fits into on the gearbox... or I may have to get my hand in my pocket and fork out £5 for some general grease. (long pockets, short arms ;) )

I have moly grease, and white grease, and lithium grease
but am unsure if any of them would cause the seal to swell..

I was going to reuse the gearbox oil...so the job would cost £5 , all in...
but I may push the boat out & get the grease, and the proper gearbox oil...bringing the total, to an eye watering £25 :)

Cheers

Gear oil will be okay to help you fit the seal. Use a socket or similar to help tap the seal home. The size of it needs to be similar to the outside rim of the seal.

Change the gearbox oil at the same time.

There are drain plugs and filler plugs on the Gearbox. Fill on level ground until the oil just creeps past the fill threads.

Job done.

I would make sure there are no leaks before you replace the gearbox oil!

Thanks everyone, for putting my mind at rest.

It has arrived today, & I was surpised at how solid it is.
