Mazda CX-5 - Mazda CX5 Spare Wheel - bhav987

Hi,

I've just bought a new CX-5 2.2 SE-L Nav Diesel Automatic, with delivery due mid September. However I have just found out (my fault, I should have looked into every detail!) that no spare wheel is provided!

Now i've never had a puncture in 10 years of driving, however I still don't want to take a risk and do want to get a spare.

Mazda however are charging £400 for a spare wheel and a Jack to go along, which seems a tad excessive.

Has anybody been through this process and found a cheaper alternative?

Cheers

Bhav

It seems (in my view) that Mazda in their wisdom of saving weight to the nth degree have decided that they can't easily fit a space-saver spare wheel in the area below the boot floor, and therefore possibly wish to 'discourage' potential buyers from having one fitted in a specially-built new floor, especially if the extra weight reduces performance and mpg.

I still think whatever the reason, they are being increadibly stingy in not offering it as standard or at least at a reasonable price comparable to most other makes (often a third less at least), and will deter potential buyers of pre-reg cars (as I wouldn't be surprised if the dealers who do this don't spec the spare wheels), myself included.

If I were you, I would get one (if you can't back out of the deal without incurring a penalty more than half the cost of fitting the [space-saver] spare) as it will definitely be easier to shift (not necessarily any higher 'book value) than a car identical in all other respects without it. No-one will car about the 0.5 mpg less or 0.2 sec more to 60mph, but in my opinion will like the reassurance (as you seem to want as I do) of having a better backup than a poor can of glue (HJ isn't impressed as far as I recall) to spray into the tyre in the event of a puncture (which will probably render it useless to repair if it could've been without the innards filled with the glue.

Both mine and the wifes car came without spare wheels, the dealer wanted £300 for one and £200 for the other.

Instead I went on www.mytyres.co.uk and it cost us about £70 all in for a wheel and tyre fully fitted delivered to our door. Click on the link on the left for "wheel and tyre packages", choose steel (its good enough for a spare) then find your car in the drop downs and it looks like the cheapest for a CX5 is about £110 + £10 postage.

Both ours took about 4 days to arrive and were perfect. Just added a jack for another £10 and we are sorted for a fraction of the manufacturers/dealers cost.

First you need to check there's space for a full-size spare, where you're going to store the jack and handle and don't forget the wheelbrace.

I have a CX-5.

What i did was buy a full set of used 19" wheels exactly the same as my road wheels, same tyres with only a couple of thousands miles on them.

Cost £650 which isnt bad considering the cost of replacement toyo tyres for my model, you also ave the option of a set of winter wheels once the OE tyres wear out.

At the time a steel space saver was around £330 which frankly was robbery, and Mazda said you can't tow with the space saver. I did buy the poly surround which again is expensive at around £60 to house the wheel.

To house a full size wheel requires further packing to around 40mm, i paid £20 for a large sheet og builders material to pack it up, so you also lose 40mm in boot height, the Kuga is the same as a matter of interest.

Hi

I too have a CX5 (2015) and just recovering from a puncture experience where the IMS kit failed to work due to the size of the puncture and the car was taken to the dealer by the recovery people. The yokahoma tyre is really hard to get hold of and Mazda were the only stockists and they charged me £146

I am looking to get a spare space saver kit, but I do not want to pay mazda £430.

Where did you get the poly surround to house the spare wheel?

Cheers

I have just got the wheel kit from Mazda. I didn’t have the replacement floor. The only difference is some blocks of foam board to support the floor. Keep the one you get with the car and get your own board £10. Cut to size. Saved £80
