How are the fuel pump and fuel gauge sender earthed and if it is separate earth point, where is it?

I would assume as most vehicles are the earth will be via the wiring loom into the fuel sender unit.

Very few vehicles have seperate earth points for individual components thesedays.

The fuel pump will be earthed to the chassis/frame at some point. The fuel gauge sender unit does not have an earth.

Is the tank plastic or plastic coated metal? The sender must have an earth-presumably common with pump as there is only one wire to the sender.

The tank is plastic. The fuel pump and sender can't work together through 1 wire. What problem do you have with the car??

I never said they did but I believe they share a common earth;the problem is an intermittent shut down of the engine caused by the pump stopping and I have noticed that when this happens, the fuel gauge goes to zero-this leads me to believe that a bad earth causes both to fail.

In common with many modern cars, the fuel tank sender has no earth to it .Both wires from the level sensor go back to the instrument cluster.
