Mitsubishi Colt 5-door DiD Diesel 2006 - Variable brilliance of Digital Dash Display - Vinnie

I have a 2006 Diesel DiD CZ2 automated manual Colt.

Over the last few months the digital dashboard display (radio, temperature, mpg info etc) has been getting progressively dimmer.

Sometimes full brilliance, then nothing, back to half brilliance, then barely visible, full brightness etc and so it goes on. Everything else OK.

Dealer says it could be a problem with the bulbs within the display.

Has anyone ever had this problem please?

How to I take off the dash panels to get to the display please?

Any help please?

I doubt very much it's going to be the bulbs as the dealer said, I would suspect either a dry solder joint or a break in a pcb track.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that.

Any ideas on removing the display unit please?

does it have a dimmer switch..could be faulty, but deff sounds like poor contact somewhere along the line.

Many cars fitted with digital dash displays have an automatic system of brilliance dependant on ambient lighting conditions.Is there any light sensitive device fitted to the dash area that could be affecting the illumination system?

Quite a simple process to get it out.

The top panel with the hazard light switch on can be pulled out when the stereo has been removed.

There's then two screws (if I remember correctly) to remove the display.

There's 2/3 bulbs within the display, which are fixed in from behind in plastic bayonet style holders, these may have come loose.

It's been a couple of years since I had my Colt (2008 but pretty much the same!)

Problem solved, thank you all who replied and particularly for method of removing the plastic panel.

Both bulbs were ok. The fault lay in the multipin plug on the back of the display - a bit of a rub over with a swiss file and wd40 solved the intermittant display. Nothing more sinister than that.

All good now.
