Hi

I drive for a living and I see many cars during the day with their fog lights on. I have noticed over the last year that whenever I see a car with one light out, if you keep looking you will see either the out light come on and the on light go out, both lights come on or both go out. Can't understand whats going on here and it never seems to happen with headlights.

Oh yes... talking of headlights, why do we see so many blown bulbs on cars of today, including tail lights and brake lights. There appears to be no enforcement on our roads.

Number plates completely obscured in filth is another common and illegal sight.

Headlight bulb renewal can entail lots of dismantling, not always obvious how to do it, so put off till owner can afford (or be bothered!)

Defective lights and obscured number plates mainly because the only Road Traffic enforcement these days is done by cameras, how often do you see traffic patrols stop anyone for these offences? Not enough patrols (and too much paperwork involved?).

Fog lights and DRLs (Daytime Running Lights).

Many cars nowadays have the foglight on the side they're turning come on at night to illuminate the inside of the corner.

Cars with DRLs often dim the DRL on the front corner of the car when indicating on that side. This is so the DRL doesn't mask the indicator.

Even my MAN lorry illuminates a fog light (may be an extra light its got lots built into the headlamp unit) the same side as i'm indicating at appropriate speeds, wouldn't illuminate it at overtaking speed, at first i thought it a bit silly, but when turning into dark wet roads particular right turns where the beam pattern is non existant it's proving itself a very useful thing.

Sure i'm going to regret this post, bound to get drummed out of the Luddites Association, in mitigation m'lud i don't run the DRL's.

Proper cornering lamps are very good GB. The first car I ever drove with cornering lamps was an imported Toyota Townace and they were really good.

Not sure how good these new VW's are that use the fog lights as cornering lamps but, They should be fairly good as fog lamps usually have a wide beam that pick up the curbs.

But what is the point in only illuminating one? Is it to indicate to other road users "Hey look at me- I'm turning a corner" if not, then two lights are surely functionally better than one?

Probably technically illegal!

The one on my lorry when operating lights the whole area to the side, in darkness, you are about to turn into, if the other light came on as well it wouldn't make a scrap of difference as it would be illuminating what i'm turning away from...plus in some circumstances both lights coming on could be misunderstood by someone as a headlight flash and possibly draw the attention of the country's last traffic officer wondering why you put your front fogs on.

Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks mistakenly at the time, the extra light isn't blinding anyone as its low and spread straight on the floor.

It's usually drivers of Mercedes Benz, BMW and VW plus those who pilot Japanese wallymobiles who drive with foglamps on when there is no fog, they don't seem to understand that headlights are sufficient for other drivers to see them. It is also illegal to use them when visibility is good.

When I had my Japanese people carrier the only Wally's were those who assumed that my front sidelights were fog lights as they were low in the front bumper, it's fog lights were built into the headlamp clusters.
