I don't change cars very often so am a bit out of touch with pricing. Had a trawl on the net for pricing sites and they all seem to want the right to harass you indefinitely after logging on!

Particularly interested in this as it seems a good spec for me and practical for grandchildren in the back!

Not wild about the colour but ticks all the other boxes and, assuming it is still for sale it seems to have been on the site for a while.

Any advice on price checking and/or this car?

I can't comment on the price, but the colour doesn't do anything for a car, that to me at least, is at best ugly. And non metalic red is one of my favourite colours on a lot of cars.

Perhaps the colour and the low spec is what's kept it on the forecourt for a while. If you can live with the colour then you may have some bargaining power, although bear in mind it may put off some when you come to sell it yourself.

It's the es specification that is not particularly in demand. Have you driven the 116i? I find them particularly lethargic and thirsty. The 118i is a much better drive and is in the real world more economical. My 118i se auto averaged 38mpg whist I owned it.

Check HJ's reviews above, timing chain problems rearing their ugly head again, which seems standard for BMW's now.

I'd also have a perusal of BMWland forum to get a general feel.

Whilst the mileage is very low that's a serious price for a standard 5 door small hatchback even sporting a premium badge, probably why its still there.

Colour makes a nice change in the boring sea of silver grey white black repmobiles.

Colour is a key factor on pricing and red car can fade. Red is not on trend at the moment hence i guess lower price.

Ignore timing belt comment as this is a petrol car

Which have timing chain failures too, if you care to click on HJ's reviews above, its an extensive list of bad points but if you persevere long enough you'll end up at the 116i timing chain/tensioner problems.

I had a 08 plated 118D for 5 1/2 years, great car. Not a big boot or much rear space but they were OK for us. With sensible tyres the ride was fine.

When we bought it we also tried a 116i and it was a slug but at that time it was powered by a 1600cc (116 PS) engine, no way would I have bought that car. When ours went in for service in early 2011 we were loaned a 116i for 3 days while they waited for a new battery (warranty). This was the later version with the 2.0 petrol 122 PS engine and it was a real surprise, could have lived with it. The engine was quite torquey but it only did about 33 mpg.

Agree with the comments about red, hate it after bad experiences in the past with 3 red cars, never again, even if they were cheap.

Thanks for speedy replies all of which v helpful. Looks like I should seek a better vehicle generally, different colour and a 118 too. I do however like petrol as we generally only do modest mileages and auto would be handy for the occasional trip to the M6 car park!

I also am a firm believer in timing chains as I used to work at Renold. You should see the drive chains they made for big marine diesels!

Just thought I might like a change from Mrs M's cast off 318 Compact so a bit more research required.

Just trawl trough adds for your cars specs and year and compare, auto trader, aa cars etc. Then you have some idea if it's a good price.
