In June last year I had a new Sachs clutch and dmf fitted. Shortly afterwards I noticed a lot of vibration when starting from hot. This has got progressively worse to the point that its almost impossible to re-start immediately if the engine cuts out when hot. It does sound a bit like an exhaust problem but that's been eliminated. My garage suggested I took it to a VW main dealer. They have diagnosed a faulty clutch, dmf and starter motor. Another independent garage said it was the dmf.

My garage who fitted the new clutch in June last year doesn't believe it could be the dmf. Surely if the dmf was faulty then it would make a noise all the time, not just on starting when hot. My garage has taken out the starter motor and this is perfectly OK so I'm deeply suspect of the advice given by the VW specialist. My garage won't budge and refuses to dismantle the clutch (6 hours labour) without me paying for the work if the clutch/dmf is OK. I don't really believe what the VW dealer has told me so it's stalemate for me.

It is important that the engine cranks over at the correct speed,otherwise the engine will not start.needs to be around 250 rpm.Make sure the battery is good .Also VW do a modified higher output starter to overcome this problem.

This is an update to my original post.
New starter motor and temp sensor seemed to cure the problem.
2 months later the rattle/vibration came back with a vengeance.
Took it to a diesel specialist who diagnosed it as a faulty particulate sensor. Problem solved.
2 months later the rattle/vibration has come back again!
So now I have had a new clutch, dmf, starter motor,particulate filter,temp sensor and still have the same problem
What now?

common rattle on golfs...centre exhaust bracket where it sits through the chassis crossmember, the welds break leaving the bracket to rattle on the exhaust pipe...not sure if you've had this bit checked.

Hard to diagnose a "rattle" on the internet..

More of a deep throated exhaust based rattle vibration, that's why vw main dealer diagnosed dmf. Told them the I had already had a new one (Sachs) with the clutch. Could it be a faulty dmf. My garage refuses to take it out as he says there's nothing to go with a new one.
