renault scenic 1.9 dti (not dci) - non running renault scenic dti (99) - 3759allen

i have brought a non running 99 scenic dti.

there is no power to the glow plugs or the diesel pump.

the flashing immobiliser light goes off so i think this means it is working.

the glow plug light doesn't come on at all though.

i have removed and cleaned the earth at the from of the engine but made no diffeence.

where do i go next and what do i look for?

i'm thinking wiring or possibly ecu, but don't know where to start.

any help much appreciated.

Try running a temporary supply to the pump and see if it starts. You can also run a supply to the glow plugs but you will need a thick wire.

check fuses and relays in engine bay .Unfortunately it is not possible to run a direct power supply to the pump as it is fitted with and electronic /immobiliser stop system.

i did think of powering the pump up, i put power to the pump with a power probe and you can hear the solenoid opening.

i did also think of temporarily powering the glow plugs up manually, especially just to see if the runs and drives ok.

but i'm thinking it's looking like being quite a main power or earth problem, and thinking that everything contoled by the ecu would not be rectified with this quick fix.

i will check all the fuses and relays over the weekend if i get time.

is there anywhere online that i can get a wiring diagam for the engine?

thanks for the replies.

Check the ECM switched earth wire that runs from the ECM to the main relay fitted behind the N/S headlamp. IIRC it's a green wire. I've had one broken before and the symptom is a non-start with no feed to the fuel pump.

thanks for the replies.

finally got round to looking at it again.

with ignition on there is an earth to the green wire going to the big red relay in the box. is this the right wire and relay?

your dti renault 1.9 bosch msa 1.5 system ecu plug on this has a 68 terminal plug the main engine control feeds the fuel pump 12v feed the best way to check this relay out would be to check at key on you have a 12v feed at ecu pin no's 23-42 -45-68 Can you check & post back Regards mickeybo

with ignition on and the ecu un plugged i probed the plug that goes to the ecu.

i have earth at 23, 45 and 68. and nothing at 42. have i done this right or do i need to leave the ecu plugged in and probe the plug terminals from the back?

thanks.

Ecu pin no 42 is the switched earthing for the main engine control relay to complete the circuit. Therefor you must have a permanant 12v feed at ecu pin no 42 key on or off can be checked at ecu plug connected or disconnected as this is a input voltage to the ecu. If you have no voltage at ecu pin no 42 i suggest you remove the main engine control relay check at relay base terminals 86 & 30 you have a 12v feed at both terminals if not ok check 30 amp fuse. Can you check & post back Regards Micky-b0

thanks for the reply.

where is the main engine control relay and what colour would it be?

there's one large ish red relay and a row of smaller black relays in the box behind the nearside headlight.

thanks again.

i have now tested that i have power in and out of the inertia switch, which i do.

also checked all the fuses under the bonnet and all have power in and out.

someone has told me that the engine control relay is one of the black relays (second one down), there's was an 02 plate but i'm guessing the same.

i only have one 12v feed so i'm thinking this is the problem.

does the power run through any component before it gets to the relay? and would it be possible to run 12v from the enertia switch to the relay?

thanks again for your help.
