Appeal after braking system stolen from car in Harrogate

Harrogate police are appealing for information after the entire braking system was stolen from a Volkswagen Golf which was parked in Back Unity Grove in the Skipton Road area.

The red Golf was parked behind houses at the Old Stables and between 6pm on Tuesday 18 November 2014 and 7am the following morning, thieves have stolen the wheels and the braking system, including the brake pipes.

PC Melony Pitchford of North Yorkshire Police's Safer Neighbourhood Service Desk, said: "This is a highly unusual crime and someone would have had to take great care and a considerable amount of time and mechanical knowledge to do this.

"From time to time we receive reports of wing mirrors being knocked or hubcaps stolen, but this is quite a different matter. It renders the vehicle completely un-driveable and will require a good deal of time, effort and expense to get it roadworthy again.

"I urge anyone who saw anyone apparently working on a vehicle in the area at the time, to contact the police."

Please call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for the Safer Neighbourhood Service Desk, or email melony.pitchford@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk

If you wish to remain anonymous, you can pass information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

It demonstartes there is nothing new in the thieving world.

Twenty years ago I remember a colleague going to his Volvo 480 one morning to find the bonnet and various engine components missing. I have also known of a Transit which had the enigne and gearbox removed - no doubt to replace one in an older model.

The current trend is theft of the front grille and headlights from the previous generation Range Rover. I saw one on a transporter the other week with these parts missing.
