I've just had my B class serviced and as part the work Mercedes are now applying QR code stickers to fuel flap and B pillar for the Mercedes Rescue system.

In the event of an accident the fire service can scan the QR code and it retrieves all the construction data for the car so they can immediately make it safe by disconnecting battery, identify fuel lines, fuel tank, airbags etc. It also shows where the main structural components are so they can select the best place to use cutting gear.

At the moment they have to refer to printed material which on rarer cars may not be available or it may be out of date. Mercedes have data on all cars from 1990 and the stickers can be applied at dealerships.

its not something I've come across before, but no doubt will be rolled out to other marques.

Suppose it will only work properly as an ide if all makes use the same code and the emergecncy services are aware of it and have QR readers with them

If the cars on fire I can just see the Fire Brigade opening the fuel flap to scan a code.

Might look like a good idea in an office meeting but I suspect seasoned profesionals will continue to act as they always ahve done.

The fire service have welcomed the move.

I can imagine nothing more painful than knowing someone is trapped in a car, but not being able to act until you have the information on how to extract them.

So they will all just stand around while the "computer says no" instead of using their expertise.

If they cannot rescue someone without the help of a computer they need to be sacked.

Modern electric and dual fuel cars contain batteries capable of delivering awesome currents and voltage.

Would you dive into a wreck not knowing if you could be electrocuted?
