I'd be inclined to say it's either a stripped or broken CV joint, a stripped gear on the input or output shaft in the box, or the differential gear has stripped.
The way to check is jack one front wheel free of the ground, put the car in any gear (with the engine OFF) and see if you can rotate the free wheel. If there's something stripped or broken the wheel will rotate and you may be able to see or hear whereabouts it is.
If gear selection has been getting progressively more difficult, I'd say it's inside the 'box either a gear or bearing. A good second hand 'box should be easy and cheap to source if the need be ? Only you can decide if going this route is financially viable, but for me, I'd try and keep it on the road rather than scrap it and buy something else.
