Skoda Fabia VRS OCT 10 - New engine needed, no warranty provided - marcy990
Dear John,
I purchased a second hand Fabia vrs in April this year from my local dealership. all was great until I'd got to July. High oil consumption, half litre top up every 400 miles on average. Notified garage about this, no response so I went in there and told them to look at it. I gave them the mileage at the point of having to top it up each time. They changed the hoses as part of the skoda recall on these cars and told me to go back for oil to be weighed after a specific amount of miles. Fair enough. WhenI went back they advised me that it needed a new engine. The new engine comes without a warranty apparently. However, I was led to believe that all this would be done as a gesture of goodwill from SKODA uk. The garage had advertised this car to me as having a years warranty and thought I'd be covered for that.
I parted with the best part of £10,000 to buy this car. Where do I stand? The dealership say it doesn't come with a warranty, Skoda uk have just advised that it does. Who do I believe?

Let me get this right. They're offering to put in a new engine, but the new engine will not have a warranty ? The garage is saying the new engine will not have a warranty, but Skoda GB are saying it will have a warranty ?

Get the garage to put it in writing. Then take that to skoda GB, and tell them you want a definitive answer.

Thank you for your swift reply. Skoda uk have been involved because I have another situation with a brand new car but that is completely different. it s a mess. Skoda uk this morning told me that the engine does come with a warranty. that I have been mis informed. however, this dealership still says no. Skoda uk are sending the warranty through the post apparently. in the meantime, I dare not drive the car off the forecourt again until something is in my hands. Something that's applicable to the engine in my VRS.
My fabia is beautiful, but I fear I'm going to be left with an un sellable car as soon as I get it back. And what will happen when this engine needs replacing in another year or 2 time. It only had 26000 on the clock when I got it. Now 30000.
Do you remember that old joke what do you call a pea in a Skoda? answer: whistle. I love this car but having spent nearly 10000 on it I fear it will be reduced to the answer in that joke. :(
Here is the response from the dealer in rough words.
So Skoda UK will be covering the cost of the engine under their goodwill scheme.
If you were to buy a part then it comes with a 1 or 2 year warranty. I believe their argument is that you are not purchasing it. They are supplying it FOC. Therefore no warranty is applicable.

Skoda GB's warranty that they say they are posting to you will trump whatever the dealer says.

So far no warranty has appeared from Skoda UK customer services since the phone call on Monday. They assured me they were putting it in the post that day. My car is ready for collection but im not having it as yet. The dealership say the paperwork will take 2 weeks to reach me in the post. I smell a rat personally. Any ideas?

Speak to Skoda GB on the phone, and tell them you want a copy of the document emailing to you, instantly, due to the discrepancy with what the dealer and Skoda GB have been telling you. Until you get the document, explain to them that you're not going to accept the car.

I picked up the car, no paperwork was ready for it so we left the showroom with no paperwork on exactly what had been replaced. All we left with was the feeling of disgust and the promise of paperwork within 2 weeks.

I have had the car for five weeks now. 800 miles and I haven't needed to top up the oil. It's runing ok. Skoda uk have sent a typed up letter saying any parts that have been replaced on this occasion will be under warranty. That's fine but the cruddy dealership still have yet to send any details on what was replaced.

I am sick of their shoddy after sales so called service.

Write to the dealer principal - recorded post. Inform them that you have requested these details as to what has been changed, they were supposed to be provided, but they have not been. You are now INSISTING on having these details. Inform them that if they do not provide the details, or an adequate reason as to why they are not providing them, then you will be taking this matter up with Skoda GB again.
