VW Tiguan Escape - Disagreement with VW and dealership - Farmer Piles

One unhappy farmer here. We bought a 3 year old Tiguan from a VW main dealer here in Cornwall and within their 12 month warranty we took it back and told them the clutch was on its way out. They said not and within a couple of months of the warranty running out it went. £1400 cost to us after some discount from them, 35k on the clock when we bought it and 46k when the clutch went. Now 12 months later when they serviced it we were told that the damper on the drive shaft needed replacing, dealership said £1000 for a new drive shaft.

Have got onto VW customer care, now the dealership is saying, " Oh we can just do the damper for £450." VW would also chip in half. to reduce it to £225.

We don't have a rough lane, rarely if ever go offroad, got a quad and Ford Ranger for that, and it has no tow bar.

Am feeling decidedly ripped off and let down by the dealership. Any experiences, opinions and advice would be gratefully recieved.

A clutch would never be covered by any warranty as it is a "wear and tear" item. At £1400 I assume it was the clutch and dual mass flywheel which were replaced, not uncommon on modern diesels.

I would snap their hand off at £225 for the drive shaft damper.

You've probably been more unlucky than average, but VWs are not always the tough reliable cars people think they are.

Very unlikely to get any warranty cover on a 3 year old vehicles clutch, thats just one of those things. i'm afraid, they probably fitted a new DMF at the same time, hence the price, whether that was really needed you'll never know.

What i would suggest is you find a VW specialist (preferably) or one of those rare excellent most make indies, your part of the world probably has a few, and get them to look after your cars from now on, the sort of place who strips your brakes cleans and lubes them on a full service because thats what should happen.

Regarding the present driveshaft damper, it's probably as good as you're going to get the offer of some goodwill to fix it, and i'd be inclined to let them do that (assuming that £225 is the whole job complete incl labour, not just the parts) then wash my hands of them.

The dealership were going to do the usual trick of throwing a complete driveshaft on instead of fixing what was wrong (why not throw the car away instead, thats the natural next stage), then probably saw the look on your face and decided that they'd maybe raided your piggy bank enough for this year, i'd let them do this one job and then never give them another penny of my hard earned.

Understand your disgust fully.

The car may only have been 3 years old when you bought it with 36,000 miles on the clock but you have no idea how it was driven or treated in that time.

No manufacturer gives warranties on clutches for that reason. Some owners can destroy them in no time, other have clutches in for the lifetime of the car.

Whne you buy a used car you save money ver the cost of a new one. Some time you have to spend some of your savings on repairs.

The only way to know how a car has been treated from day 1 is to buy new.

FYI back in the 70's 40,000 miles was about the average life for a clutch. But they were simple to replace on RWD cars and only cost pennies with no DMF's to worry about.

Agreed with other replies. Incredibly easy to burn out a clutch. My father-in-law (before he gave up driving) went through 3 clutches in 2 years, covering about 8k miles.

I once saw him waiting to pull out from a junction. Full revs, and then slipping the clutch out slowly. A lovely smell of burning for the next 10 minutes !

My mate who used to work in a big south london VW dealership told me he has seen clutches burn out on cars with 6k on them.
