HI all,

I finally went around all the dealers and came away in a bit of a quandry. Being, as I am, after n 18-month-old economical hatchback for around £15k, I've now done the rounds of the 116d ED, the A3 1.2 TSi petrol (because it seems so efficient) and the Golf 1.6 TDI, then on the way back, favouring the A3, I passed a Volvo dealer and dropped in.

I'm going to keep for 3/4-ish years and put around 18k miles on the clock each year, all were 13-regs.

What surprised me was that the Volvo V40 D2 (and seemingly according to Autotrader as well) is the most expensive of the lot, by around £1k over the Audi, and nearly £2k over the BMW/Golf even after negotiation - truth be told the Volvo dealer didn't really move unlike the rest, but prices generally seem higher like-for-like. Similar mileage (20k miles), very nice car and probably the one I'd favour all being equal, despite being slowest and being a Volvo!

Is it likely to hold its value better than the rest when the time comes to sell, or is this just a halo effect as its not 3 years old yet as a design and there's no supply to the 2nd market? I'd expected it to be similar to the Golf in price, and the difference (albeit as a percentage) I would hope to recoup at the other end.

I'd suggest having a look on Autotrader, and seeing what prices are like over a wider geographical area. Also, non-franchised prices (if there are some out there outside the dealer network) will tend to be a bit more ... realistic.

In general though, I've noticed that Volvo dealers seem to only sell cars that are up to 2 years old - and even then, most of what they sell seem to be ex-demo, etc.

Regarding fuel economy, you might find yourself rather disappointed with the Audi 1.2TSFi petrol engine. Though HJ doesn't have and 'real' fuel economy data for the A3 with that engine, the A1 with the 1.2 TSFi seems to be returning about 40 mpg. I'd expect the A3 to do similar, or possibly a bit worse, being heavier.

Its a new model, and to be fair it looks upmarket and completely different (thankfully) to the millions of German Japanese and Korean clones out there, so yes i think its used values are a bit high as they seem to be with any properly new model...this may not affect German cars insofar as you can hardly see a difference between the new and the previous models.

Some Volvos hold their values, mid to late 2000 V70's for instance, yet the saloon S60 version is worth about half as much...a real bargain now if anyone's looking.

Jury is out on latest Ovlovs.

As said above, it's a bit too early to tell with the V40 as it's the newest model compared with the other cars you've looked at, and seems to be in demand, which will keep the forecourt prices up for the moment.

My last two cars have been Volvos (both V60s) so I like them, and take my advice with a pinch of salt ... but I'd go for a more powerful engine than the D2. It's adequate for the car but not fantastically economical. From my time on the Volvo forums, the 2 litre 5-cylinder D3 or D4 variants give the same economy in real-world usage as the D2, and are effortlessly torquey and much more enjoyable to drive.

I had the 163bhp 5-cylinder motor in my last V60, and it averaged 46.8mpg (real, not on the computer) in my 40,000 miles of ownership, and that certainly wasn't trying to drive economically.

Thanks all!

It is a bit different - I guess thats why I'm considering it over the Audi. Re: the 1.2 TFSI engine, I looked at realmpg on Seat Leon and Golf models, and it seemed to be 48+ on both - actually read it in a HJ article recently as better than the 1.6 TDI, but thought I'd try it in a Golf.

Of all the diesels the Volvo seemed smoothest, but maybe I should hunt around for a D3 as price aside, the lack of oomph was my biggest concern, which I assume wouldn't cost much more at this age and probably be worth more when I come to sell? IT's just finding one!

I have the V40 D3 and it's a lovely car. I was in exactly the same position as you as looking for something a bit different having considered a Golf/Focus etc and I haven't been disappointed with the V40 in any way (other than I am not sure it's as economical as it could be but that may be down to me).

Excellent build quality, effortless to drive and (as usual with Volvos) supremely comfortable. I did pay more than I wanted to for mine but don't regret it for a minute.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Hi what mpg do you get from a D3?

Volvo V40 - Volvo V40 Residuals - Dingle232

I do a mix of town and Motorway driving so I reckon around 46. On a run, with the cruise set to a sensible speed, I can return over 50 but be aware that the 5 pot engine is a bit thirsty when driven hard - it makes a wonderful noise though :-).

Also be aware that mine is Automatic so a manual may return more for you.

the 5 pot engine .........makes a wonderful noise though :-).

A matter of personal preference - I think they sound like tractors

I may try to see if there's one I can test drive then. The sole concern I did have with the D2 was I felt I had to keep revving it to pull away around town which surely will kill any perceived fuel economy?

What sort of margins will dealers be working to at this end of the market - am I right to expect to be able to shave off up to 10% off the ask? Audi and particularly the BMW dealer seemed to be able to be pushed not far off which surprised me...but the Volvo dealer was quite firm that the price was the price...
