My 97 Vectra 1.8 has suddenly developed a problem- the oil light has come on and although it starts ok it now clatters like a diesel. It's had an oil change recently and I didn't notice anything wrong until the oil light came on. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Thanks

The oil pump has failed or, more likely, the pressure relief valve is stuck open. Had a few problems with sticky relief valves due to the excessive mileages between changes of the service schedule. I think that the valve is accessible from outside but I stand to be corrected. Goes without saying dont even show it the key until you have established the cause. Stunning engines these Ecotecs eh?!

Thanks Andrew. The RAC have just looked at it and said the same. According to my Haynes manual the pressure relief valve should be accessible so I'll check that tomorrow. The RAC guy also noticed that the oil level was higher than it should have been- could this have caused the problem?
