my son has had his car nearly 4 months(bought secondhand from a peaugot dealer with finance) and has had so many problems..the day we picked it up we found the bumper to be split(ok when we inspected it) this was done by the garage hitting the kerb on forecourt..this took 2-3 weeks to rectify.

the fuel sensor was replaced at 2- 3 weeks..car kept cutting out

wheel bearing went at approx 6 weeks

heater blower motor was intermittent from the start..now just being replaced by warranty

as it has a sporty exhaust..we believed it to be a bit noisier than normal from the start..but it now turns out it needs a particulate filter (vaux dealer has quoted a price of £1200) and garage will not agree to repair.

on inspection of exhaust he now also has a leaking shock absorber

please can you give us some advice on what rights he has with the garage etc..

His rights are, to an extent, dependent on the age of the car, and the price paid.

Without those details, nobody can tell you anything for definite.

he paid £5295 and its a 57 reg.he bought it with 38000 miles and he has done 6000 to date

At 4 months on he still has a bit of leeway, get him to involve the finance people as the car is not fit for purpose and he will return the car to the finance company if necessary. Do NOT stop making payments.

Thank you ,we will look into this..

We looked at a getting a new Corsa 1.7 D early in 2008, would have been registered late 57 or early 08 if we had proceeded with the purchase so about the same age as your sons. Pretty sure from ,my memory that they did not have DPF's, that is whey they interested us.

Regardless of that warranty's don't normally cover exhaust components just like they don't cover brakes and clutches, they are considered wearing components.

Suggest you get the opinion of another garage as to whether it actually has a DPF before doing anything else.

Took car to halfords sat.for second opinion.he has a DPF and it has a small split on flexibit near engine, which with his faulty fan motor may have been letting harmful gases into his car,he is getting a written diagnosis Tuesday which may help his case, and their quote was £800

No it wasn't. It was the truth.

Take it to a real garage like I said.

"It was the truth."

Here we go again. Once more "telling the truth" is used as a justification for upsetting someone.

It's the way you put it that is crucial. In any case, what one person regards as "the truth" can be different for someone else.

The only person who would have got upset by my post would have been Mr Halford, don't think he posts on here. Basically I only said what has been said before, don't use these quick fit places, use a propper garage.

But it appears it OK to post virus's and other malware links (which do not get removed) but not to warn posters about the perils of using high street chains instead of propper garages.

"The only person who would have got upset by my post would have been Mr Halford" - apparently not so, as Avant pointed out that "... it was complained about..." and I think that suggests, by a member of the forum.

"Basically I only said what has been said before, don't use these quick fit places, use a propper garage."

Put like that, it sounds fine to me. I recall the original post being much more abrasive.

By the way, for what it's worth, my recent experience of Halfords (and, incidentally, of Kwik-fit) fitting stuff has been entirely positive. However, I wouldn't trust them to do something more demanding.

Maybe abrasive but true.

I have used Kwik fit to track a car in the past. Did a good job at £25, the s****** wanted £75 to check and another £50 to adjust.

But would I trust them to do anthing other than that and fit tyres, no way.

thankyou for ALL your opinions...the idea of going to halfords and 3 other dealerships..vauxhall/peaugot and a local garage was to get quotes and advice and then compare before going to his dealership,is'nt it better to go armed with constructive information ? ...likewise we too have used kwikfit etc for tyres and not much else as we like to pay for a 'proper service'...ok ?

vauxhall corsa 1.7d sri - my sons corsa - FP

"Maybe abrasive but true."

Well, I've made my point. There's clearly no meeting of minds on this.

If I really, honestly believed it to be true that Thunderbird is a stupid person, should I say so? I think not.

It may be pointless to get involved in this to-and-fro, but it should be possible to state truth without being unnecessarily abrasive (I don't recall the offending post). However T-bird has said that the abrasion would only be felt by Mr.Halford, who he also says doesn't post on here. So why?

vauxhall corsa 1.7d sri - my sons corsa - Avant

Because it was the original poster who quite rightly complained. Thunderbird's post was both offensive and unhelpful: all he could offer as advice was 'go to a propper (sic) garage'.

We can of course mention Halfords but not to insult them - not for the first time, I recommend that Thuinderbird reads the sticky thread about naming and shaming.

"It should be possible to state truth without being unnecessarily abrasive". Quite right, Andrew: fortunately the great majority of posters recognise that.
