£5k to spend on a new car. Recommendations please. - Daipugh

Our family car has died - fuel pump on a 51 plate Volvo V40. It's not worth the repair bill.

Consequently we're looking to buy a used car as a replacement and would appreciate everyone's opinions and suggestions.

Our criteia is

* a large family car (estate probably but not essential)

* low running costs

* good mpg

* average mileage for age

Recommendations gratefully received.

Vw Sharan is (I think) a good choice. It's definetly big. Diesel versions have good mpg, I had one and it only consumed about 6-7 l/100 km. Had to get rid of mine after the flywheel got busted.

Hyundai matrix on a 58 plate

Frankly any car larger than a focus would fit the bill. We need more criteria to advise otherwise you get the extreme options of the Sharan and Matrix! How many seats Do you need, how many miles a year, what sort of driving etc etc.

Maybe not -- Mondeo estate.petrol if less than 20k miles a year. Also Avensis, Mazda, Honda. See, not that difficult!

Personaly i'd be shoving a second hand pump on the V40 and keeping me £5k under the mattress.

Just in case the magical improvements in the economy we keep being saturated with are actually election in the offing codswallop to keep incompetent/lying/thieving politicians, and their media groupies, on the gravy train.

I'm with GB. Secondhand pumps shouldn't be too hard to find from a suitable breaker and they are usually easy enough to access via a hatch in the floor under the rear seats (or sometimes the boot floor).

Or a Logan MCV on a long term lease.

I presumed he was referring to the diesel fuel injection pump, which is rather more costly, and you have to keep it scrupulously clean when changing it. A diesel pump reconditioner might be a better option, but then again a 51 plate V40 is not worth much and probably has other lurking problems.

Whats the on paper value of a car got to do with anything, a new Focus Plutonium Executive might be worth £20k on someones books, a new Jag £40k, i wouldn't give you a thankyou for either of them, nor 99.9% of the rest of the cloned cars made in the last 10 years.

I'd rather spend £500+ on an old reliable car thats got zero depreciation in order for it to last another couple of years, than see 10 or 20 grand in net depreciation flying out the window over the same period...obviously if its a neglected heap then no, but i'm judging things by my maintenance and car care standards, not the throwaway items people seem to see their cars (and lovers) as these days.

Thanks for the range of suggestions. I'dd be interested in keeping the Volvo on the road, but it's the high pressure pump which has failed, the fan belt is disintegrating (cheap to replace, but labour costs push up the price), it's due it's MOT tomorrow, and the turbo has been leaking for about a year.

Thegarage have quoted £1200 for fan belt and pump, so with MOT and future turbo replacement, it appears to be time to cut losses (reluctantly).

We've been offered an 08 CMax 1.8 Titanium with 39000 miles on the clock for £4700 by my sister in law. Any opinions on the car and price. It's in good nick and she is asking less than market value.

It does sound like the ovloV has reached the end, then.

A C Max isn't my cup of tea, but if it's the sort of thing you're after, I'd say it sounds like a good deal. And you know where it's come from.

And even better, it's not a diesel. A C-Max seems to tick most of your boxes so have a good test run in it and see if you like it.
