Hi forum my first post,

ok so I bought a focus 1.8tdci and had work done flywheel & clutch and full service and new cam belt kit, after driving the the car for approximately 5 miles while the car was stationary with the engine running, I quickly ran into shop for some ciggrettes leaving a friend in the car, the engine stalled by itself with a clink sound, now after towing the car back to the garage I had the work done the mechanics telling me the fuel pump seized leading to the new cam belt to snap.

Does that sound right or is he having me on, and he made some kind off mistake love to hear from you guys and oh he asking for £500 for a second hand engine already spent near £500 on it

He might be he might not.

I would be getting him to put his side in writting then asking a specialist to look at the fuel pump for a second opinion.......without telling him the back story.

I plan to to get a second opinion from another mechanic. But I'd thought if fuel pump stopped working all it would do stop pumping fuel getting into the engine not snap a brand new timing belt i'm no mechanic kinda makes sense wouldn't you think. Getting an a written letter from a mechanic would give him sense somthing going down

Unless the fuel pump is driven by the timing belt...don't know if it is on these engines but on quite a few others the water pump is done by the timing belt so it's possible. If it seized up the belt would snap.

b***** stupid design to my mind but there you go...

Something doesn't sound right here. The fuel pump is chain driven from the crankshaft, these rarely give trouble. The camshaft is then a belt drive from the fuel pump.If the belt only has been changed, then the chain is not interfered with.I suspect that the belt and tensioner have been incorrectly fitted.

The mechanic did mention the fuel pump runs off the timing belt looks like I'm gonna have make my loss on it. And replace a new engine It hard finding a reliable vehicle nowadays with honest sellers.

I think the cambelt/tensioner has been incorrectly fitted and the garage is trying it on. The fuel pump is chain driven from the crankshaft pulley and not by the belt. How can a sepertely driven pump cause the belt to snap !!!! If the pump has seized ( highly unusual as they are pretty reliable ) then the chain drive may slip/snap but it wouldn't effect the cambelt.

The recommended pump drive chain renewal is 100000 miles/10 years so it's plausible it could have worn/snapped at this age, but the belt will still be intact.

Get it independently examined first before being taken for a ride by the garage.
