I purchased a new Juke from a dealership, it is now 6 months old. Three weeks ago I noticed a kind of 'bubbling' effect on he rim of the console by the gear stick, I contacted the dealer who in turn contacted the warranty dept of Nissan
I had no idea what caused it but virtually accused of spilling something chemical on it, spilling coca cola or dangling an air freshener from the fear stick!!!( this is not an isolated incident)
None of which where accurate as there is rarely a passenger in it and I am the only driver. The paint work on the console is not fit for purpose and how are manufacturers allowed to produce cars with such shoddy material?

Well, we have a Juke and it is beatifully finished and the painted gearlever surround remains in perfect condition.

As we have three children and the car is a mess, one can only assume your problem is a one off or you have inadvertently spilled something on it. You may not remember.

That tacky centre console alone put me off considering a juke. Let alone the er...ahem individual looks.

I have looked at a lot of second hand Jukes with around 15k on the clock and every one had the finish of the gear lever knob worn away but all had the centre consul paint intact.

I was looking at used Jukes of 2 or 3 years old and I came across a black one with the silver console, which had exactly the same problem, paint bubbling around the rim, so not an isolated problem. The Sales guy said it would be done under warranty.

If I were you I would persist with your claim and don't be fobbed off.

is it common on the nissan forum?

I too have looked at a number of Juke and to be honest, the fact paint was wearing off the gearstick at extremely low mileages made me wonder what the quality of the rest of the car was like!

I know its a little thing, but a scrappy looking gearstick at 10k miles makes the car look like some Arthur Daley clocked shed!

Thank you, I have just had a battle with the warranty people and they refuse to repair it under warranty, my car is 6 months old and is in immaculate condition, even if I did have an airfreshener dangling from the gear stick, which I haven't then it still shouldn't bubble up.

I said that Nissan were negligent not to point out that any type of chemical will cause this on purchase, then at least forwarned is forarmed. The sales guy is lying in your case.

I shall never buy another one that is for sure, probably the second worse car I have purchased!!

Not being personal, a fool and their money are soon parted.

What I mean, is that if people continue to fall for glitz and glamour over substance then the manufacturers will cut corners where and when they can.

Its the way you look after them and treat them.

We use no hash chemicals, just a damp leather on the plastics and a vinegar type cleaner on the glass. Never had a problem with trim.

We have seen many cars that were under a year old at supermarket and even dealers that were low mileage but total sheds. It was not the quality of the car but the quuality of the owner/user.

Classic was a C-Max, 6 months old, 8000 miles, dealer principals personal car, looked like it had been used as a Baghdad taxi inside, totally destroyed, not a good advert for Ford quality. We had one for 5 years, used it, looked after it, dog in the back was hardly a concours judge, when cleaned it looked like new.

In defence of the OP, the Juke (and other Nissans like the Qashqai/Note) are very nicely built and put together. This problem of paint bubbling around the gear lever console should not be taken as a sign that the rest of the interior/car is shoddy.

For the uninitiated, the console is painted metal ("resembling a motorbike petrol tank") and comes in matt silver, metallic red or white, £0 cost options when new. It seems to be some of the matt silver ones which have a problem.

agreed, as I said, mine is immaculate, I look after my cars and can't stand it when people don't! I used car wipes at first, but find a damp cloth much better

you are right, however I am not a fool but have been foolish on this occasion!

Why on earth would anyone want a central console resembling a motorbike's petrol tank?

For our next fashion craze, how about a gearlever in the shape of an exhaust pipe from a Transit van?

Maybe some people like the look of it? What one person dislikes another can like. I think the fact the Nissan Juke is so popular shows there are quite a lot of people like the look.

Or a speedo in the centre of the dash the size of a large dinner plate....

Oh wait, Mini have already done that....

I do wonder why they do it though, To put a painted part in an area of the car that is likely to suffer some abrasion from watches, rings etc. Just not a good idea in my opinion.

Having said that, I thought the same about the Roll Royce's they were showing on TV the other night, With diamond set into the door cappings.

I had one offered as an option by Hertz last year and was going to say no but took it anyway. I really liked it and ended up on a spur of the moment trip from Glagow to Lochinver and back, about 10 hours driving. Could have done with a bit more power but my passenger and I really liked it, Cup holders were useful on a long journey and size 10 passenger didn't need to fight the handbrake for space.

Good news. Thanks for coming back and telling us.

The handbrake placement to the left of the centre console is correct for a LHD car with the driver on the left. Nissan obviously couldn't be bothered or the bean counters told them it would cost too much to change it for RHD.

Maybe we could say the same about the MG Midget that had the handbrake on the left of the transmission tunnel.

The Mk6 Golf also has it on the left. The Mk7 doesn't have this feature because it has an electronic parking brake, but that is a whole different story.

Same for so many other European cars though.

Both my Volvo S40 and Merc SLK have handbrake levers to the left of the centre console.
