I've been offered a motorbike that i really like by someone i know. He's had it for as long as i can remember but has no log book for it. He said he bought it from a popular motorbike dealer (which i know to be true) but never registered the bike. It has been off the road for years now.

If i went ahead and bought this bike off him then would i be the legal owner given that he never registered it after he bought it from the dealer. And also would i be in the running for any fines regarding non-payment of mot/tax? I don't want to go ahead with the sale if i'm going to get stung by DVLA

If you pay for it then unless anyone else claims title, which seems unlikely, you're the legal owner.

DVLA records the keeper, not the legal owner. Their function is to (i) allow vehicles to be traced (ii) faciltate collection of VED. What is it's current status on DVLA? - you can check this on their website. Was it ever subject to SORN? If DVLA have cancelled the number then presumably they'll give it a new one from the correct year.

Any issue with fines for failure to tax/SORN or insure are surely for the current owner. Once it's yours then you need to insure it and take it to a pre-booked MoT test.

Are you telling us he bought it new and never registered it? If so what has he been doing with it? That's an awful lot of money to be sitting around doing nothing.

I'd be VERY suspicious.

Not being a biker I've no idea what a ZXX6R might look like. A bit of googling however suggests it's track capable.

Is answer therefore that it's never been registered because it was used competitively and transported by trailer or similar?

In that case I'd have thought there are means to register it analgous to those for an import etc.

If that's case then no question will arise about failure to register previously, absence of MoT etc.

The Kawasaki ZX6R is fourth in the top ten of most stolen motorcycles in the UK. Thieves love 'em in common with most other 600 cc sports bikes.

I would be very suspicious of the provenance of this bike. Unusual that he bike was bought new and never registered. As you say that the current owner bought it from a dealer he should have a proper vat invoice on headed paper from the dealer, ask to see it.

Even if the invoice looks kosher check that the frame number is present and looks authentic and hasn't been re-stamped, the frame number is usually on the front of the frame on the side of the steering head bearing housing.

If he can't produce the invoice or can't find it, or it's a load of nonsense scribbled on an invoice torn from a book you can buy at a stationers - stay away.

Can you not run acheck on the bike like you can with cars?

Just to put some of your minds at rest.

My friend hasn't raced it or stolen it. He bought it second hand from a well known dealer of motorbikes in the UK. He crashed it soon after he bought it and has been rebuilding it ever since (he isn't in a high paid job). It wasn't a right-off either so is still roadworthy (frame isn't bent) in that respects.

As to why he didn't register it i have no idea. But that is not of my concern. Mine is just what would happen now if i applied for a new V5 so that I am legal.

Why not get your mate to apply for a new V5. If all goes well you are OK to buy it. If it doesn't he gets any fines. Suppose if he pays them you would be OK to buy it then.
