Two flat tyres due to pothole - what to do? - flunky

Edge of carriageway was damaged, and the car suffered two flat tyres (both passenger-side tyres)

They are brand new ~£110 tyres (fitted last week).

Car was towed home.

Not sure if the tyres would be a write-off? How do I tell? Is it worth getting the car checked out for other damage?

I think you would have to have tyres removed from the rims and have them examined, an impact bad enough to deflate a tyre must surely have damaged it, otherwise how did the air escape? What about reporting the pothole, at repairmystreet.com and getting compensation from the relevant council, if you are both persistent and lucky? Any damage to the rims BTW?

Had exactly this happen to me in the early 90's. 2 wrecked tyres and 2 bent (steel) rims. Got a letter from the person whose house was adjacent to the pot hole and they confirmed how long the pot hole had been present and sent it to the County County with the bills for tyres, wheels and suspension alignment. Initially they refused to pay but when I threatened further action I received a cheque for the full amount on a "no prejudice" basis.

Have a look at websites that are set up for reporting potholes such as repairmystreet.com (as suggested by AS, but seems redundant) and fixmystreet .com.

If it's been previously reported, then you may be in luck in getting your costs from the council.

It's a good idea to report road damage through such websites at it could help others who have suffered damage.

Thanks BT - I was wrong. I reported a pothole to my local council yesterday via the "fixmystreet"website. Went out to it, submitted a description, photo and position on an interactive map via phone GPS and got an acknowledgement with e ref number!

Check the rims on a balancing machine too, they may be buckled.

In my experience of claims: take lots of high quality photos of the pothole, the condition of the surrounding carriageway and and other previous repairs to the road. Then take photos of the damage and get a tyre place to replace them and put on the invloice. "Replace two new tyres due to road defect damage"

Send a letter to the council with some but not all photos and copy of invoice and state that you couldn't see the hole because it was wet or due to speed or whatever is appropriate.

If they don't offer to pay, report back.

^ ^ We are so lucky to have Superman posting here, with his X ray vision he can read the road surface down to the nearest millimetre from hundreds of yards ahead, yeah even the distortion of standing water holds no fears for him, thats not a puddle thats a pot hole under that water exactly 3" deep in the proper money with a razor sharp kryptonite far edge at an angle of 115 degrees, avoid avoid avoid.

More observant than Poirot.
