Should I sell my Renault megane 59 1.6 petrol. - pool182
I bought a brand new Renault megane dynamique 1.6 petrol 4 years ago and it has just over 32000 miles on the clock. I recently changed jobs and wanted a run around for high miles up to 500 per week, I didn't fancy putting the miles on the megane so bought a yaris diesel which was going well until I crashed it last week and is up repairable.

I guess my question now is should I just use the megane to do the 500 miles a week (only getting around 37 mpg). Or should I buy another small diesel run around. Eventually I will change the megane to a diesel car of some sort, but am wondering if I will get value driving the megane now or selling it. It has very low mileage 8000 per year but this will dramatically increase if using it for work.

I would definitely take a hard look at the economics of running two cars. Hum drum economy aside, there's no reason to keep the miles off the megane since the residual values of Renaults are quite low anyway.

The thing is I want to buy a 2nd hand landrover as my main good car in the near future, am wondering now if I should drive the megane as a 2nd car. How many miles will the megane realistically achieve?

If the megane has been reliable far, why will it not remain so. Keep driving it and save the money you would have spent on a second car to save up for a Landrover.

Friend of my wife's has a 10yo (03) Megane. Now used mainly by her daughters as Uni transport while she drives the Audi TT 'fun' car she shares with her husband.

The Megane still looks in good shape and while I don't think it's been wholly trouble free it still seems to run OK. It certainly shot past me on the M1 a month or so ago with one of the daughters at the helm!! No reason why yours, properly serviced, shouldn't go to that age and/or 150k+ miles.

If you want, or more particularly need, a Land Rover then I guess you'll need to go on running two cars. If I were in your situation I'd be looking for a diesel Berlingo as both a family and work car. Presumably there's insurance to come for your Yaris and even new a 1.6/90 'lingo can be had for well under £12k.

But then i like Berlingos so much we run two of them!!

My thoughts are that if I keep the megane for my 500 miles per week that it's not very economical, but I know I had the car from new and know the service history etc.

I would really like a 4x4 but not economical for my 500 miles per week either, this why I wanted 2 cars. Should I bite the bullet and buy a landrover then not really use it, seems a bit of a waste. Or face the fact I might have to drive it to work and just have the one car?

At the moment I really only need the one car, but am not really keen on the megane as it's not what I want to drive.

Help.

A diesel Berlingo could be the answer as Bromptonaut suggests. If you would like a 4 x 4 at weekends, would a Skoda Octavia 4 x 4 fill the bill? It ratther depends why you want a 4 x 4. An Octavia with the 1.9 PD or 2.0 CR diesel engine (avoid the 2.0 PD) could do as your only car.

I had experienced a similar type consideration. I changed jobs last year and with it took onboard a 300 mile weekly commute. So should I buy a cheap to run car for the communting whilst keeping my 32 (ish) mpg 2 litre petrol Primera for weekend and famliy use only?

I came to the conclusion the cost of running a second vehicle - insurance, maintenance, tax and MOT and depreciation would far outweigh the savings a 50 mpg car would achieve. My last Primera kept going to beyond 170+k miles at which time I sold it, and I will keep the present car to (probably) a similar mileage - with deprciaton being a hidden cost factor. Of course a spike in fuel costs might change the dynamnics of the costs.

Also consider the driving experience, it's a lot of time behind the wheel, for instance I find cruise control great for reducing the stress of fast A road driving.

I appreciate what you are saying but I do like the idea of having two cars, one for high and one for low mileage. I am thinking of buying an 06 yaris diesel as I really liked the last one. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure why you're asking for advice as you seem to have made your mind up. The sensible option is to run the Megane.

A LR Freelander is not a sensible buy if out of manufacturer's warranty period as they can be quite unreliable. Have a look at JD Power or the What Car? reliability index before you take the plunge.

I'd probably keep the Megane as a 4 year old petrol that you've had from new, been serviced (?) and been good to you is a better bet than an 8 year old diesel even if the diesel is a Toyota. Your Megane is less likely to need new discs, pads, shocks and other items that an 8 year old car might and could be a lot comfier. £1,000 a year more to fuel the Megane than a 50mpg diesel is not insignificant but a dmf or an injector or two on the diesel could set you back most of that. It is a bit of a gamble really the £1000 a year fuel saving would make me think twice. I'd try out the Megane for a few months see how it goes on the longer runs and higher miles. Whatever money you save will then be available for you to flush down the loo when you buy a used Freelander.

Currently it is costing me, £15 more per week to run the megane than my last car (diesel yaris)

I was thinking of keeping the megane, though and buying an 05 freelander, as this would just be for occasional use.

A 05 freelander?

You can be serious.

Dont do it.
