Audi A4 B6 TDi 2002 - Battery Charging in-situ/Replacement - A3 A4

After a week of inactivity, my A4 has manged to flatten its battery and is refusing to start. As the drive is on a slope and I'm unable to get a 2nd car alongside, is it OK to charge the battery in situ?

Are there any precausions i need to take, ie disconnecting the car leads and what possible problems may arise (radio code aside).

As soon as I get the thing going first stop a new battery, any recommendations?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

If you are going to use a slow rate charger, then there is no need to disconnect anything.Use a top brand new battery from the likes of Bosch ,Exide,Varta, etc. The only problem with the a4/Passat models is that it is bit of a struggle to remove the battery, especially on the diesel models.hth

Thanks for the reply, what makes a charger slow rate? minie is slowing 9.5v would that be regarded as slow rate, or is it based on current?

You're right about the location of the battery, looks fun to remove!

Slow rate as in low current charger, not one of those booster high current jobs that many garages use.You will need to unclip the plastic/rubberised wiring conduit that is attached to the engine bulkhead, before the battery can be lifted out.

If you are going to get a new battery anyway, why bother to charge the old one? Just fit a new one where you are.

I assume he has to travel in the car to get a new battery.

Spot on!

Managed to charge it overnight, it just fired this morning. New Bosch battery now fitted (not easy!) and all OK.

Anyone looking for parts from Eurocarparts its worth having look on their Ebay shop as I found the battery was cheaper even with the present 15% discount code applied, you can still order and collect in the hour in the same way.

Thanks for all the replies.

9.5 volts won't give you any charge at all (unless you have a 6 volt battery) I would suspect either your meter or charger are u/s.

The best sort of charger to get is an old fashioned heavy one with an ammeter in it, in my experience these modern 'smart' chargers are rubbish.

Had a "rubbish" Gunsuns auto charger for 25 years now. Charges perfectly, never over charges and damages the battery, you can leave it connected permanently of float if you want. Gets used frequently during the winter on the classics battery so its not a toy used once a flood.

I am refering to the modern almost weightless chargers with a swtch mode power supply and LEDs, many of them don't work from new.

I wouldn't rate a Gunsons charger as being modern.
