We bought a second hand disability scooter for mum with no batteries, bought some batteries but the batteries are not charging.

When conected to the charger the lights come on and the empty light flashes on the panel, but the scooter does not move.

Is it the scooter, batteries or charger. The batteries are 35ah x 2 and the charger is only 2A

Any help please?

Are they the correct batteries?

Were they new?

Are they connected correctly?

Did they come with any instructions?

Were the batteries discharged when you bought them?

How long did you leave them on charge for?

Perhaps there is a fault with the electrics on the scooter.I think you need to find the services of a specialist or auto electric tech.

Thanks

Do you think I can charge the batteries using a standard car battery charger???

You can use a car battery charger ,but you need one suitable for deep cycle batteries. Those that are continuously being discharged.Scooters and golf buggies etc.Try this,www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product..._

Sorry for being a dumb blond but

I have the following charger which is about 10 years old now

www.gunson.co.uk/items/pdf/Products/G4106.pdf

and says
This battery charger is particularly suitable for use with 12 volt lead/acid
maintenance-free and other sealed batteries that may be damaged by the use of a
normal (non-automatic) battery charger. Such batteries may be referred to as
"dry-fit", or have gel electrolyte. It is also suitable for 12 volt lead/acid batteries that
are commonly used in the following applications:
• MOTOR CARS AND MOTORCYCLES ? GOLF CADDIES ? ELECTRIC INVALID
WHEELCHAIRS ? CAMPING, CARAVANNING ? SAILING, POWER BOATINg

I presume it is OK but making sure

If uit is the scooter anyone hazered a guess what it might be, it was working when we bought it

Charger sounds ok.Unfortuntely with these scooters, there are so many different models on the market it would be difficult to chance a guess as to your problem. There are usually many electrical connectors on these and you may find one has come adrift.hth

>>it was working when we bought it

Your OP states: "We bought a second hand disability scooter for mum with no batteries"

How do you know it was working when you bought it if it had no batteries?

Many of these things have a battery charge indicator when switched on. If yours has one, what does it show when you switch it on?

mobility scooter - Batteries, disability scooter - julie page

The man connected some batteries and showed me that it worked.

If switched on without a charger it shows nothing and everything is dead, if the charger is connected it shows fully charged but also the empty indicator flashes. All the lights work fine but it will not go. The charger light shows that it is charged.

We took the batteries out and connected a car charger and both batteries were chasrging at less then an amp so I pressume they are OK?

It would seem the batteries are fully charged. I'd suggest you need someone experienced to look at the thing.

Could the seller have swapped the scooter demonstrated with a different one?

Have/could you contact the seller for advice?

You may have some recourse against the seller if it was not as advertised, in which case trading standards may be of assistance.

Please keep us informed, I'm intrigued.

Well I found a cable adrift, a blue one that has a male connector, the other end connects to two red ones, guessing it is earth but where does it go?

If I can not get it going I will sell it on Ebay for spares or repair

It is quite possible that the batteries may have been stored away discharged and then left to long before charging, that is the normal problem with deep cycle batteries, if they are not being used they must be charged every four or five weeks or they will get to a state that is not recoverable from

The easiest thing is just to use your car charger and charge them seperatly, then use a meter to check the voltage on each battery, they should be about 13.5volt each, if less than 12 volts after a full charge they will be shot

You can replace the 12v 35ah battery here

http://www.batterytrader.com/12v-35ah-sla-sealed-lead-acid-batteries-p-26530.html

If the batteries seem ok after you have charged them on your car charger and work the scooter then your charger must be faulty, you can get a 12v 4ah mobility charge with 3 pin DIN fitting here

I hope this helps you and anyone else
