This is a perfect example of Eurocrat legislation countering common sense and depriving us all of choice.

A plastic tank is a light item - most of its weight is in its contents. Of course, if I buy a vehicle with a 65 litre tank, I can choose to fill it only to 45 litres. Thanks to Brussels, I'm now denied the choice.

Idiots, and a double carrot award to M-B for slavishly following regulations designed to make cars appear to perform well when, in real life they don't achieve their quoted performance figures.

As with stupidly dazzling LED stop lamps and wipers set up for LHD, when will M-B learn to apply common sense in the best interest of their customers?

So don't buy one. Buy a Toyota Yaris HSD instead.

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - artill

I hope the fuel guage is accurate!

Mine tend to read empty a while before they really are so i never get within 5 litres of the claimed capacity when i fill up. So with the 41 litre tank you have roughly a useable 7 gallons. Thats not a great range on the deisels, but the petrol versions will need filing stupidly often.

Are they going to fit the 41 litre tank on the AMG versions? You might not even get 100 miles out of one of them if having some fun. Not that the 66 litre optional tank sounds much better for the AMG

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - oldroverboy.

Don't forget Brussels wants you to

take a break more often if driving long distance

use more expensive motorway fuels

pay for that lovely motorway food.

(Don't think so!)

the "loss" is to reduce weight to reduce emissions to lower you rfl of bik for those who care about it. one of my previous cars had a 65 litre tank, but the current is 55litres, so what!

And i suppose those with a dinky fuel tank (in a dinky car) are complaining too?

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - SteveLee

Makes the 100 litre tank in my Rangie seem very un-PC - fantastic!! Even more reason to love it.

Doesn't take much to press Europhobic buttons in here does it?

Yes, the CO2/consumption test thing is Europe wide and goverend by directives.. Is there however a serious possibility that either (a) an out of EU UK could go its own way on such things or (b) it would be better if we reverted to staus quo ante where every nation set its own rules?

If you read far enough down the article the OP links to a 66litre tank will be a cost option in Germany but will be standard on UK models.

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - RT

Even if we left the EU, virtually all our cars would still comply to their rules because UK sales are so small in the big scheme of things so manufacturers would just use what the've already got - apart from the steering position !

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - Brit_in_Germany

Indeed Brompt, it does help if posters would actually read the articles they are commenting on. For me the telling quote is this:

“The reduction in weight of the new C-class has led to a significant improvement in payload capacity. This is up by 50kg and is now 90kg higher than the competition.”

Re-designing the car to catch a headline even if it is against customer wishes. Or is it to cope with the Germans becoming fatter?

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - alan1302

I thought I'd clicked on the Daily Mail by mistake reading a lot of the posts on here! LOL

Nothing to do with the EU - Mercedes have done this themselves.

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - Collos25

Agreed, the UK cars will get the 66l tank as standard and the German market will be offered both the 44l and the 66l nothing whatsoever to do with EU legislation purely Daimler marketing in Germany that will not effect UK buyers.

They are by the way being prosequted by the EU for using an inflamable liquid in their AC.

>They are by the way being prosequted by the EU for using an inflamable liquid in their AC.

Slight correction Collos - they are refusing to put an inflammable liquid in their AC. Their tests show that the new ozone hole friendly coolant can ignite in the event of a collision if it comes into contact with hot surfaces.

I wonder if space matters more than weight to most people?

Read that bit myself so it won't even affect UK buyers.

Pointless starting the thread really unless the Europhobes want another platform to air their well balanced views..

I think the OP probably posted it in good faith. The Europhobes then came out in response.

Well, my well balanced view is that i took it as a joke and replied tongue in cheek, but Brussels (bless them) are perfectly capable of doing something just like this.

Father welsh, mother scottish one grandparent irish, other belgian, ex swiss, 2 french/swiss daughters.

Europhobe me?

Anything that stops us all going to war against each other again is good by me, and I have had the privilege of working in various of the member states.

I don't think this is a new option on mercedes. Different sized tanks have been offered on a number of models for a few years. If you search second hand C classes on merc retail site they give the build info with all options and all UK models state "extra capacity fuel tank".
New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - sandy56
according to the public spec for the new car the UK tank will be 66 litres. The small tank will only be fitted in Germany etc, and you can have the bigger tank as an option crazy but true.

It takes a very unbalanced (unhinged perhaps?) person to want to be ruled by unelected foreign technocrats - apparently objecting to this mind-numbingly ridiculous and undemocratic situation makes you some sort of bigot! Two legs bad eh Komrade?

Well I'd say the opposite. You need to be unhinged to see the EU in terms described above. Not perfect but better than being isolationist driven hither and thither by cross currents between US and Europe. That though is political opinion.

My question remains how would situation with this MB be different if (a) UK were outside EU or (b) EU did not exist at all.

The terms are correct, EU commissioners (the ones who create laws enforced in our country) are elected by each other - the whole European parliament/MEP set up is a façade to fool people into thinking there's a democratic process - you might want to be ruled by unelected people who you cannot vote out (or vote in) I do not. The same technocrats are busily trying to get all cars sold in the EU fitted with some sort of remote shutdown system so the authorities can stop you travelling. It will be done under the auspices of safety and crime prevention but it all sounds rather big-brother to me.

I did not mention the EU and fuel tanks - that was someone else's argument. I was merely defending the view that the more perverse standpoint was to support being ruled by unelected technocrats over the people we actually directly voted into parliament.

I prescribe less Daily Mail and you read more actual facts.

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - Bromptonaut

Commissioners are nominated by their home governments. While they're then subject to confirmation hearings and allocated portfolios by the Commission President they're not self perpetuating in the way you imply.

UK Commisioners have all been notable politicians at home whether high profile folks like Roy Jenkins, Neil Kinnock or Christopher Tugendhat. A few others like current postholder Cathy Ashton are perhaps technocrats.

And I repeat the question from before in a different form. How would remote shutdown be different if we were outwith EU? Do you think we could avoid it even that our politicians would give us the choice?

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - Andrew-T

< I was merely defending the view that the more perverse standpoint was to support being ruled by unelected technocrats over the people we actually directly voted into parliament. >

You can easily make too much of this elected/unelected argument. The UK's 'elected representatives' have in many cases been elected by a good deal less than half the electorate.

Of course you can support this by saying that they can be removed at the next election, but that can be several years away, and people usually want quicker results than that. On the other hand we can only blame ourselves for the election results we get. Would it be better if all voters were obliged to vote, as in Oz ?

I thought the Oz/NZ topic would have had more response. Still, nothing like a little controversy to get a thread going. :)

New Mercedes C-Class fuel tank shrunk to 41 litres - Avant

It was more interesting when it was about cars.

Personally I wouldn't buy a C-class whatever size of fuel tank it had, but it's difficult to see why anyone would specify the smaller size. If you have lots of stuff to carry around and need the room, but don't do long journeys, buy a van.
