Alfa Romeo 156 Veloce 1.9 16v JTDm - Engine light on Alfa Romeo156 - the man44

I have recently purchased a 2004 Alfa Romeo 156 Veloce 1.9 16v JTDm

I and i am a little concerned as I have an engine warning light appearing with a message telling me to take it the a garage.

The seller said that the warning light had been on for over a year and that it is related to the ERG value. I researched this and that didn't seem to be too much of a big deal.

I have not noticed any issues in performance and it has been driving fine.

My main concerns are that sometimes there is a faint car smell of something burning its very faint and goes away quickly. (I could be paranoid it is so faint)

Also I went to the shop the other day and as I went to drive off it would not start. I used some jump leads to get it started again and it has been fine ever since, this was 2 days ago.

I know that the obvious thing to do is to tie this into garage and I intend on doing this. But does it sound like I could have any bigger problems here?

Until you get the car into a garage for diagnosis any advice would be pure guess work. Best get it diagnosed first and take it from there.

Are you sure the light is on? I'm sure you said that the seller said all the lights were OK.

I don't think anyone would tell an untruth when selling an old car.

I gave you one tip and that was not to buy an old Alfa, so my next tip is to take the bulb out and buy an air freshener.

The OP had said after receiving advice from this forum that he had decided aganst this car but appears to have bought it.The problem could be very expensive to rectify much more than the car is worth probably the reason why it was sold of course it could be quite cheap to rectify but I do not think so, a new exhaust system maybe or a new EGR valve or both or something much more serious you will only find the. problem by taking it to an Alfa specialist .To think that there must be hundreds of Alfas for sale and against advice the OP buys one with a known fault and travels hundreds of miles for this pleasure.

Do look round the country for Alfas with warning lights on before you will buy them.Possible faults are as above.

He saw the light, believed the seller and still bought it. Beggars belief.
