MINI Cooper Countryman - Fussy auto gearbox / V-Fuel - 2wellies

Disappointed in 2013 Cooper Countryman (petrol) auto. Changes down far too often in inappropriate circumstances - e.g. slight rises at 70ish on motorways and other situations where using flappy-paddle manual to force upchange is accepted and not overridden by auto. Noisy, fussy, and possibly uneconomical, progress unless constantly working gearchange. Hardly the point of auto, and this is my 5th (2 Volvos, Mercedes and BMW).

Dealer and MINI UK not too interested so in desperation I brimmed tank (always use non-supermarket fuel) from 7/8ths empty with Shell V-Power. Almost immediate improvement to auto behaving close to expectation, far less fussy, smoother, more responsive to driver inputs. At last a pleasure to drive. Is it me, or can V-fuel do this?

Its you. Different fuel will make no difference to the gearbox.

Are you using cruise control when this happens?, if so this can happen on some autos, the car immediately goes to full throttle to maintain speed as speed starts to drop and that can trigger unecessary downchanges, i suspect if you drive it with care applying only gentle acceleration in order to maintain or increase speed, then the car will most likely stay in top gear for you.

By the way, is this satans box or a proper TC auto?

I suspect better fuel would result in less throttle being needed for the same power, hence less downchanges.
