Wow

£12,295 for a brand new 7 seater diesel Chevrolet Captiva.

Pretty much a re-bagged Vauxhall Antara.

Remember Chevrolet are starting to run down their european operation but they have promised spares and this is identical to the vauxhall so spares should not be an issue.

It gives the mid spec Dacia Duster 1.5 diesel at £11,595 a run for its money.

I would say the Captiva is better value.

If only Chevrolet would not have been realistic about their place in the motoring world (budget not mainstream) and would have priced their vehicles accordingly, they may have been a success.

Edit - I think you mean "£12,295 for...." in the first line. Amended for clarity.)

You don't need me to say it's badged the other way round - Daewoo now called GM Korea builds Chevrolets and the Captiva is rebadged as an Opel/Vauxhall Antara.

You're right though that if the Chevrolets had been budget prices it might have been a successful brand - there is a fundamental difference between European and North American consumers about how good budget vs mainstream cars need to be - GM Detroit genuinely seems to have thought that selling Daewoo/Chevrolets at Ford prices and pushing Opel/Vauxhall prices up to Audi/BMW/Mercedes was a viable business plan.

A colleague picked up a Vauxhall version of this car last year, paying about £16k for a brand new model. It is currently doing a magnificent 23mpg and thats based on filling, doing 100 miles and filling again. He did get 30mpg once over a 60 mile run at 55 on the motorway.

Needless to say the 100,000 mile warranty for life isn't really helping.

Is that because

1. the 2.2 engine is rubbish

2. the car is heavy

3. poor areodynamics

2 & 3 don't help but mainly 1

My Santa Fe is over 2000 kg kerbweight, automatic transmission and typical SUV aerodynamics and I get 33 mpg overall from it's 194 bhp 2.2 engine - with 40 mpg on a long motorway run at 70 (GPS).

Just returns the prices to what they should be for a budget make. £8200 for a new aveo 1.2s is excellent,

Chevrolet Captiva - Chevrolet Capitva 2.2 Diesel Bargain - daveyK_UK

Is the aveo a re-bagged corsa?

No, it's not

Is the aveo a re-badged corsa?

No - it's built on the latest version of GM's small car platform, the Gamma II, also used by the Mokka and likely to be used by the next Corsa - so basically a generation newer than the existing Corsa.

Anyone know what the Captiva is like as a tow car?

Went with a relative who is about to change their car for a Jazz or Micra (cant make his mind up) to the Dacia/Renault dealership and the Chevrolet/Vauxhall dealership.

He liked the Sandero stepaway but found it to big for his needs.

He hated the Chevvy Spark, thought it was cheap and nasty.

The Aveo was alot more impressive but the dealer at first denied the price of the base model has been reduced on the Chevvy website. Only after offering to show him, he said they could do a 'one of' discount for a local resident.

Yeah, pull the other one.

Needless to say, this was a major dealership chain (Pendragon) and they are only able to sell what they have left in stock; no more Chevvies can be ordered from UK Head Office as they have no stock.

Suprised by his comment, I assumed they would have a stockpile at one of the docklands?

Have they managed to dump them all on to the hire companies or been able to get the big dealership groups to take the lot?

Chevrolet Captiva - Chevrolet Capitva 2.2 Diesel Bargain - RT

If they had any sense, Chevrolet UK should have been managing their stocks in line with actual sales rather than projected sales - so they may not have many in the pipeline.

They're only going to be sell them now at discount prices, where they should always have been priced, so no point in ordering more from the factory.

Having announced they're pulling out they'll be gone early!

Chevrolet Captiva - Chevrolet Capitva 2.2 Diesel Bargain - Collos25

This obviously has been known by Chevrolet for a long time and they appear to have limited production of UK spec cars so as not to effect the price to much.

Chevrolet Captiva - Chevrolet Capitva 2.2 Diesel Bargain - alan1302

How will their pull out affect the avilability of spare parts etc a few years down the line?

Chevrolet Captiva - Chevrolet Capitva 2.2 Diesel Bargain - RT

Chevrolets are all standard GM parts bin underneath so Vauxhall dealers should suffice - although body and trim items could be problematic.

Chevrolet Captiva - Chevrolet Capitva 2.2 Diesel Bargain - daveyK_UK

The main concern will be the depreciation; its not as if Chevvies held their value before this announcement.

Saying that, a friend has had a Daihatsu Sirion from new and was worried when Daihatsu pulled out of the UK about parts and deprecation.

He decdied to run it until he could no longer get parts.

Needless to say, his 56 plate sirion has never broken down and has only ever needed brake pads.

Not bad for a re-bagged Toyota purchased for a litle over £6 grand brand new.

£35 a year road tax, it was as if the Toyota group was ahead of the game.

As I understand it some Chevrolets are .made by Daewoo so NOT standard GM.

It's the Spark I has been considering and that is one of the Daewoo ones and with it not being based on a Vauxhall/Opel car am worried about getting parts in the long term as I was planning on getting a neraly new one and keeping it as long as possible.

As I understand it some Chevrolets are .made by Daewoo so NOT standard GM.

GM took over Daewoo in 2001 and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary since - just like Opel and Vauxhall.

It was renamed initially to GM Daewoo but renamed again in 2011 to GM Korea.
