Transit - diesel engines - JustMike

Happy New Year to fellow Swarfega fans.

I am ready to buy a Transit (any size) and have enjoyed them in the past but am not up to speed on their more recent weaknesses.

I have had the "old" 2.5d RWD and 2 litre DI fwd versions which were reliable but they are getting long in the tooth now. (or rusty)

I see lots of 2.4 rwd with blown engines ( no doubt some of them have been destroyed by towing heavy plant trailers too fast) but some are sold as 2401cc and others as 2402cc. Is this the same engine or is one a 16v version ?

Can you fit an 8 valve 2.4 engine to a blown up 16v (which I presume must be costly to repair so the van is disposed of)

Which one is the best buy ?

I look forward to any of your experiences on this.

Best wishes for 2014

Mike

The problem with doing engine transplants in any modern vehicle is the electronics, if they are part of the vehicle rather than the engine you can have all sorts of problems. Someone on here may know the answer but I think you really need a dedicated Ford site.

Thanks Peter. I wondered if that was the case . Mike

Firstly, the 8 valve and 16 valve engines are completely different. No parts are interchangeable. The 16 valve engine is the same as that fitted to the Mondeo from around 2002 onwards, although differering in states of power/tuning.Most are common rail diesel, but there are a few di models around. The biggest problem with this engine is timing chain wear and injectors (on common rail models). Also not forgetting dmf issues.hth

These really do suffer with failures as stated above , but also suffer with random loss of oil pressure and piston failure. I have seen many of these with piston failure that hasn't been caused by an injector fault.
Shame really because the Transit is a good design with a weak engine which Ford need to address.
