Cancelling policy with 3 weeks to go - ncb? - jmo21

I am buying a new car. Have 3 weeks left on the policy on my current car.

I plan to take out a brand new insurance policy for the new car - possibly another provider.

As I have not completed this full year with the old car, I only have 10 years noclaims rather than what would be 11 years come end of december.

Does that mean I have broken the ncb? Do I go back to zero years as this year is incomplete?

If so, does that mean that it would be best to keep my current policy but just update with the details of the new car and then complete the year and that means I will definitely have the 11 yrs no claims?

Thanks!

Not an expert but why cancel? You won't get any refund and may complicate your ncb though differrence between nine and ten years will be pretty small.

Don't get hung up on NCB - it's the cost of the policy together with extras you need such as foreign use that counts.

I would suggest not cancelling at all and allow time to click on another year, but you'll need proof of NCD so you may have no choice (would become a second policy), and i can't see 11 years NCD being any different cost wise to 10 years...though i fully understand if this is a pride thing and nothing wrong with that at all.

Maybe see how much your present insurer wants for covering the new car for the three weeks (this is where the cheaper insurers bend you over with admin fees), or defer taking delivery of the new car for three weeks and have the new insurance in place for the day.

Or, depending on the new insurer have a chat with them tell them the dilemma and see what they can come up with, they might waive the three weeks bit and grant you the full years NCD as a welcoming present...this would be much easier to discuss face to face at somewhere like an NFU office where competence and customer service are still to be found, perish the thought of trying to have this conversation with a typical call centre.

edit.

If this car is brand new then NFU (for example) give two years 'car replacement' in the event of write off / theft as part of their comprehensive policy, no doubt others do similar, but not sure how this would work if you started the policy 3 weeks hence, best find out all implications and then decide.

I certainly do not plan on actually cancelling the policy as I am not due any money back and it has all been paid for the full year anyway.

My main concern is that if I go with a new insurer, will my current insurer provide me proof of the 10 years no claims (it would be just short of the 11 years as that policy would not be due to finish til end december)

Since this year has not been completed is this not continuous claim-free year so broken, does it go back to 0 years?

So confusing!

Most companies judge 5 years no claims as the maximum, with a few going up to 8 years. Surely your period of claim free years only gets broken if you make a claim.

You can generally only use your NCB on one policy. If you don't cancel your existing policy your new one will be on zero no claims.

Your choices are.

1 Delay handover of your new car for three weeks
2 continue with your current provider for three weeks then change to a new provider with 11 years (although your insurer may only give you proof of the maximum they discount for).
3 Cancel your current policy and move to another with 10 years.

I would go with choice 2. Pay any extra for the three weeks then shop around.

Your renewal notice normally arrives 3/4 weks b4 the renewal date.

Use it as your proof of NCB that you send to your new insurer - simple!

I would strongly recommend you don't just leave your old policy running after you've sold the car and insured with another company. Either cancel it or transfer it to your new car if you don't cancel it there's a remote chance of it being the most expensive mistake you will ever make.

Besides the above your no claims bonus will be tied up on ir

Check with your existing Insurance Company if there is any charge for cancelling.

Just over a month ago I gave my car to my daughter and cancelled the insurance with saga. It was paid for up to the end of November so I expected 3 weeks reimbursement.

Instead I received a demand for £41.00. Contacting them they explained there was a £50.00 cancellation fee. I wrote a strong letter pointing out that I had been insured with them for many years with no claims whasoever. They then apologised and cancelled the demand. Well worth checking......

a) the difference between 10 amd 11 years NCB is likely to be zero or peanuts

b) cancelling a policy with much less than 2 months to run will usually cost.
