3-week old tyre had a blow-out? - doc1601

Hi everyone,

My car had a tyre blowout on the motorway approximately 2 months ago - it was a new tyre, Capital, that had been fitted 3 weeks prior. It exploded with no warning, and I was lucky to escape with just some damage to the front bumper of the car (no other cars involved).

I was not able to keep hold of the blown tyre at the time, and a new one had to be fitted asap at the nearest centre so that I was able to get home. I have now been told by my insurer that there is not enough evidence for me to claim my losses back, despite sending in pictures of the tyre and the tow truck report of the tyre.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other way I could prove that the tyre caused the accident? Is it normal for a 3-week old tyre to blow out on the motorway?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi everyone,

Is it normal for a 3-week old tyre to blow out on the motorway?

Of course its not normal for a 3 week old tyre to blow out on the motorway, if it was the hard shoulder would be littered with cars waiting for new tyres.

Most tyres bought never have a problem but they do have a very hard life. Its very easy to pick up debris, get a slow punture and without spotting it the tyre overheats and blows out.

Occationally tyres will have manufacturing defects, its unavoidable with any product and that can also lead to a blow out. The brand you bought is an "economy tyre", is there any history of problems with their products?

If the tyre is not fitted correctly that can also lead to a blowout.

But as for claiming off your insurance why would you want to do that, your excess will probably be more than a new tyre, I know mine is (probably nearer 2 tyres). Its not accident damage, punctures are part of normal life, probably just unfortunate you did not spot the problem before it became serious. I have never heard of anyone claiming off thier insurance for a tyre but I was offered tyre insurance a few years ago when I bought a car to cover against such eventualities, did not bother.

Without the tyre, it's impossible to deduce what caused it. it's unusual but best just to put down to experience on this occasion. Even a small object hit at speed could cause it.

I struggled to find any reviews for this make (Capitol?), those i found didn't sound promising.

The blow out could have been a foreign object entered the tread at an oblique angle and gradually cut through the sidewall every revolution (the reason i am against goo and reflate kits), or a hundred other scenarios, or as said poorly fitted.

The tyre itself could have delaminated suddenly for some other reason.

It could have been faulty.

Without the tyre and some competent person examining it the cause will never be known.

Can only speak for myself but tyres (and car parts in general) i will only buy known reputable makes.

I took a rental lorry in to have a new tag axle tyre fitted couple of years ago, the renter chooses cheap as they can get, the known brand tyre came off with no problems, it took 3 strong fitters to force the new Chinese (not the make in the OP) replacement onto the rim...as soon as they knew what make was going on the fitters were expecting problems and didn't have a good word to say about them.

It might be a better idea to try the tyre manufacturer or supplier, not the insurer - unless more than just the tyre was damaged. Though if the tyre came from Poland or North Korea ....

You may have hit a sharp object, or the tyre had been slowly deflating, or just possibly there was a manufacturing fault. As Bazza said, without forensic evidence, who knows?

I think the OP wants to claim for the damage to the car from the insurance.

Capitol tyres are made by Nexen.

Country of manufacture is meaningless these days for tyres - big brands, eg Goodyear, have some ranges made in China and imported into Europe/UK.

I have had 2 nexen tyres blow out, one at a few days old, (august 2012 just after buying the car) M40 at 70 mph, but realised there was deflation and got off at J2 which was a 100 yards away, and the second one of the pair went sunday at low speed, heard the "pop" and felt it, pulled in safely and changed to spare. Both were nexen n blue eco lightweight construction. getting something else fitted tomorrow.

This is the reason I tend to buy premium brands now but, It still is no guarantee they won't fail and if they do you can be sure they will try and blame it on misuse.

I remember buying a new car for the front offside tyre to develop a bulge in the sidewall after just 300miles, They blamed it on me kerbing the tyre which was nonsense. In the end the dealer did have it changed at their expense.

I had a new tyre(not a well known make) fail shortly after fitting-tyre dealer replaced it-I had a Dunlop cycle tyre start to split-Dunlop replaced it.

I had four kumho tyres fitted in the summer I drove on them for less than a month but at high speeds across Europe over 1000 miles. Shortly after leaving the wuro tunnel and joining the m20 the osf ture blew. I put the spare on and in the morning I contacted kumho who agreed to replace it. But maybe I was lucky.
