Hope someone can help...

I bought a Rover 75 from xxxx in Dec 2011. The car looked great, he said it had been HPI checked and was not cat D. I stupidly believed him and didn't do my own HPI check. In Aug 2013 I decided to sell and get something newer. When I came to part-ex it, the new seller said, no - and did you know it is cat D? I was astonished and mortified, realising I'd been cleverly duped. The car does not look or behave like there's anything wrong with it but it seems cat D is like having the plague - I've had to drop the selling price by £1200 and still had no concrete offers. I've written to xxxx, asking him about it and threatening to tell Trading Standards (his website states all his cars are HPI checked). Is there any way I can get compensation, or at least tell the world that the man is a crook? He claims to be a family business - but does his family know that he's an unscrupulous crook? Feedback gratefully received.

Nope, and more fool me. He seemed totally genuine, but I'll never trust a dealer again. It's a shame that lying scumbags like xxxx exist in large numbers. Learnt my lesson - and hopefully all others reading this will also be ultra careful when dealing with dodgy 2nd hand dealers. I suggest an HPI check and taking along a mechanic.

I've never (knowingly) been in this situation, but I would guess you may already have done all you can do. On reflection, does xxxx's place look like the sort that might sell such cars? And I might question the wisdom of buying a car from an extinct maker ...

But was the car a bargain, and did it give you any trouble? If it was OK, learn the lesson and move on - or keep it a bit longer, of course.

The dealer seemed genuine - and the car looked and still looks good. I've not had many problems with it (flat battery, fuel pump) and am now forced to hang on to it now as I refuse to sell it for nothing due to its history. By the way, it wasn't a bargain - £3500 - which was about average for the time. They still fetch around £3000 now with my mileage (62k). Now I'm advertising it at £1800 and no joy. So, I'm keeping it, but I'll do all I can to make sure xxxx is famous for bent practices - am off to trading standards now.
