Today I took my 1996 Mercedes E300D for an MOT. I wasn't expecting it to pass, as it hasn't been used for 6 months on public roads. It was the third car in and the first to pass. The failures were a 2006 Corsa and a 3 year old Mercedes ML. The latter needs £600 spending on it to get it through!

The Bard knew all about this:

"For never anything can be amiss when simpleness and duty tender it"

Obvious really, when you compare the build and complexity of the various vehicles under consideration. Unfortunately, even the Bard could not have foreseen a doubling of energy cost and revenue-gathering politics which have applied since your M-B was built. But for that, I'd run one.

Yes, you're living on borrowed time, it will all go wrong soon.

I'd rather have a 1996 Corsa than a 1996 Merc.

That's because you've never owned a Mercedes !

I sold a corsa 1.0 12 valve last week ,nasty little car ,it sounded more like a sewing machine than a car .

It used to be considered a compliment to say a car went like a sewing machine ....

I've driven a MK1 and a MK2 Corsa. The 1990s 1.0litre version was one of the very worst cars I have ever driven. Even my 1.0 litre MK1 Micra was a better car. One day I did 600 miles in the Micra. That car astounded me.

The last Merc I went in was a W124 diesel which would be 30 or so years old. It had done almost 500,000 miles and the owner had no intention of getting rid. It did 130 km/h without any fuss, no creaks or rattles, no warning lights, oil pressure spot on.

Not surprising - the 1.0 engine in the '82-on Opel Corsa-A / Vauxhall Nova originated in the '62 Opel Kadett-A and the 1.0 in the '92-on Corsa-B was a 3-cylinder version of the Family I engine used is bigger Opel/Vauxhalls.

Ugh I learnt to drive in a Corsa - I'm surprised it didn't put me off for life!

E300D probably the simplest most robust car you could run these days, see our long sold '95 saloon regularly and it still looks fine, good to drive too with a real auto box.

Still have a 124 coupe, probably see me out.

Don't remind me about those horrible 3 cylinder Corsas, one of the most vile contraptions ever made, i used to pick them up from BSM after defleet, didn't have the power to pull themselves up the decks so a run up was necessary, the only popular car i can recall as gutless was the Escort mk5 in 1.4 lean burn form.
