Nissan Micra - DVLA fine me 600 pounds? - carmeloc

i dont know if this is the right place to post a thread about, but just wanted some advice about fighting against the DVLA?

Basically when i first got my car it was registered to my home address in London. I then moved to Leeds to study. I cant really remember changing my address via DVLA, but anyway my car was then registered to my leeds address.

whilst being back in london i apprantley stopped in a yellow box and got a fine. As my car was registered to leeds they sent me the fine to that address where i wasnt living anymore.

Anyway, this morning the police arrived at my door saying that i owe DVLA 600 pounds for late penalty charges which i was totally unaware of. Its all a case of misunderstanding, and i really want to fight it as i dont have that sort of money, and i had no idea about this fine in the first place.

Has anybody got any sort of advice out there for me?

Do the police really turn up on peoples doorsteps asking for money for the DVLA. Normally that would be a bayliff's job.

And if the Police really did turn up they obviously got your address from the DVLA. If that is the case why did the DVLA not write to you.

Need I say more.

Exactly. It's like they have waited for months and months to tell me, so they can get more money out of me. I dont really know what to do about the matter, its driving me insane. I may have to take it to court, but the idea of that scares me.

Are you saying the police turned up for the sole purpose of informing you you owed the DVLA money? Or are you in deep do-do about something else?

Sorry - but something tells me we haven't got the full picture.

No - DVLA haven't "waited" months - they've probably been trying to communicate with you at your old address.

Since it's always easy to check what address DVLA have for you, just look on the V5C and your driving licence - it should have been clear to YOU that they had/have the wrong address.

The whole point of DVLA having up-to-date addresses for registered keepers is to give a reliable contact point so the only person in error in this case is you.

The additional penalties for not paying the original penalty are normal and only occurred through your omission.

Pay up, get on with your life but remember to keep authorities informed in future.

This doesn't ring true.

Plod do not collect fines on behalf of DVLA.

In the first instance what was the 'fine' for? Failing to notify change of address? DVLA cannot fine you direct for this offence they must take Court action. As such summons would have to be served. Did you get one?

Failing to pay the PCN for box junction offence?

I suspect somewhere along the line there are additional offences no tax etc etc?

Post has more holes than a colindar.
