fiesta 97 - Fiesta ignition key barrel (again - sorry) - gumski

Hi there,

Sorry to raise this old subject again, I've read all the posts I can find on here without a solution. The ign key no longer wants to turn so I need to get the barrel out. I have no pin hole to poke a paperclip in, I can't see any circlips, there is an indented 'hole' on top of the barrel housing but it is solid so no go. I have read on here the barrel is held in by a silver cap that is crimped over the barrel and this seems to be what I have, question is, how can I remove this cap without causing too much damage? Just to confuse things I live in Spain but the car is a German import.

My first post so thanks for looking,

Gumski

The problem you have, is if you can't turn the barrel, you can,t line up the spring loaded release pin that enables the barrel to be removed without damage.Removing the silver end cap does not improve the situation. You may the the services of a locksmith that can jiggle the tumblers.hth

Try the simple things first - do you have a spare key? You may find that it is a worn key rather than a knackered barrel and maybe having a new key cut may solve the problem.

Thank you both for your help - I only have one key but as you say this may be the problem, can get one done locally so will try a new key first.

Your regular key cutting places will use your existing key as a template, so if it's knackered the new one will be too.

The only way to get a correct version would be to order it based on the number and have it created from scratch. A proper auto locksmiths can do this, but it tends to be a tad expensive.

This isn't quite right, Ford keys are cut by reading the code of the old key (this can be done by eye), then the Tibbe machine will cut a new one as it should be. They are not a like for like copy as such. Look it up, it will explain it better all about how Ford keys work.

If you get just a plain key cut, you will be able to see if this solves your problem, with regard to the immobiliser chip in your old key, if you hold it next to the barrel whilst using the new key, the car should still start.
