Do you think there would be any benefit in upgrading the speakers as a compromise instead or do you think that wouldn't make any difference to the sound quality?
On most cars, there's usually a significant benefit in replacing the el cheapo speakers supplied as standard with something of better quality. Take one out. If it's a lightweight, simple object with a thin paper cone, you can do better.
No need to "name and shame", but there's a car I had recently that came equipped with eight speakers. Replacing the cruddy standard main units with decent dual-cone objects and just leaving the standard seperate tweeters disconnected provided a vastly superior sound. "Number of speakers" seems to be the new "number of cupholders" in a car's spec......
